When to plant autumn coriander?

Coriander is the most important seasoning vegetable in our lives. It is delicious whether it is used in cold dishes or hot pot. It is grown in both the south and the north of China. It has a short growth cycle and high economic benefits. So when should autumn coriander be planted? Let’s take a look below.

1. When to plant autumn coriander?

Coriander can be cultivated outdoors in spring, autumn and winter. When the temperature is stable at 8-22℃, it is the suitable sowing period for coriander. We can sow spring coriander from early March to mid-April; during the White Dew solar term every year, the average daily temperature in my country is stable below 22℃, so we can sow autumn coriander from early September to early October; we can sow overwintering coriander from the end of October to mid-November.

2. How to grow coriander well?

1. Variety selection

Coriander varieties are divided into large-leaf and small-leaf types. The small-leaf type is cold-resistant and has a strong aroma. It can be eaten raw, seasoned, or pickled. It is suitable for planting in autumn, but it grows relatively slowly, the plants are slender, and the yield is relatively low, making it suitable for self-sufficiency in farming households. Large-leaf coriander has a lighter fragrance, but grows fast and has a high yield, making it suitable for large-scale planting. When cultivating coriander, you should choose varieties that are heat-resistant, late bolting, and fast growing.

2. Seed treatment

Coriander seeds will have difficulty germinating under high temperature conditions. The temperature is high in summer and the moisture in the soil evaporates quickly. In order to ensure early and complete germination, the seeds must be carefully handled before sowing. First, crush the seed coat, then soak the seeds in 300 times diluted 1% carbendazim wettable powder for half an hour, then take out and wash, and then soak the seeds in clean cold water for 4-5 hours, then put the seeds into a cloth bag, hang it in the well 30 cm from the water surface, soak the cloth bag in water once a day to replenish moisture, and after 7-10 days, when the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

3. Land preparation and fertilization

Coriander has a relatively short growing period, a thick taproot, and is a shallow-rooted vegetable. It has soft sprouts, poor soil-breaking ability, and a strong ability to absorb fertilizer. You should choose soil that is relatively fertile, has good water and fertilizer retention properties, can be irrigated during drought and drained during floods, has good permeability, and has not been used to grow coriander for more than five years. You can use tomatoes , cucumbers , beans, etc. as the previous crops. The residues of the previous crop should be cleaned up to reduce the occurrence of diseases and insect pests.

4. Planting seeds

Coriander is cultivated off-season in summer and autumn. It is usually sown from mid-May to early July, with a seed rate of 1 kg per mu. It can obtain both a higher yield and a higher selling price. Before sowing, water the bed sufficiently. After the water has seeped in, mix the seeds with sand and spread them evenly, then cover them with 1-2 cm thick fine soil. After all the seeds are sown, they can be pressed down to conserve moisture. After sowing, pat the soil lightly with a plow, cover with straw to retain moisture and promote seedling growth. The next day, depending on the soil moisture conditions, water the soil once in the morning and once in the evening. Remove the cover after the seedlings emerge from the soil in 5-7 days, and make sure to keep the soil moist during this period.

5. Field management

When the seedlings are 4-5 cm tall, thin out the seedlings and weed to ensure that the distance between seedlings is 2-4 cm. After thinning, apply a thin layer of manure water in combination with irrigation. The first topdressing is applied when the seedlings are 7-8 cm tall. At this time, the amount of fertilizer applied should be large, with 20-30 kg of ammonium sulfate applied per mu. The soil should be moist, watered every 4-5 days, and shaded to reduce temperature. Coriander should be harvested in batches to facilitate plant growth.

6. Prevent and control pests and diseases

The main diseases include damping-off disease in the seedling stage, virus diseases in the adult plant stage, anthracnose and leaf spot. The pest and disease control of pollution-free coriander should be based on the principle of prevention as the main and treatment as the auxiliary, combining multiple prevention and control methods to control pests and diseases to the minimum range.
