The Flower Language and Legend of Red Lotus

Flower Language

The flower language of red lotus is: beauty in the deep mountains, golden bell hanging high.

There is a poem with the same name that perfectly expresses the flower language of the red lotus: "Born with natural beauty, hidden in the deep mountains, happy to know the flower fairy with Lianmu. The green leaves are as green as the clouds, and the red flowers reflect the sun and dye the sky. The rolling green waves are swaying in the wind, and bursts of fragrance float in the clouds. The golden bell hangs high and the red lotus is pretty, and my heart is forever connected with Amu."

Don’t you think it’s beautiful? The legend is even more beautiful.

legend

Legend has it that during the Ming Dynasty, there was a beautiful village called Taoyuan Village. The village was just like its name, a paradise on earth, and the villagers lived and worked here in peace and contentment for generations.

There was a girl named Li Honghe in the village. She was tall and graceful, pure and beautiful, and shy. There was a young man named Lianmu who lived in the girl’s neighboring village. He was handsome and had an extraordinary bearing. The two of them have been childhood sweethearts and have made a vow to never be separated in this life. However, as fate would have it, after hearing about Li Honghe's beauty, the county magistrate of Gaozhou wanted his son to marry her. He went to the Li family to propose marriage many times, but was rejected each time. The Li family is a family of scholars, how could they bow to power? So the anxious Li and Lian families arranged the marriages for their two children in advance so that they could get married as soon as possible. On the day of the wedding, the county magistrate heard the news and sent people to snatch the bride away. Honghe took her out of the village. However, Honghe would rather die than surrender, and when the people were not prepared, she jumped into a ravine by the roadside. When Lianmu arrived and heard about this, he was filled with grief and indignation. In order to keep his promise to stay with Honghe until old age, he also jumped into the deep valley.

Later, the villagers found their bodies in a deep valley and buried them together. The next day, a miracle happened. Two trees grew on their graves. The two trees were close to each other, with intertwined branches and leaves, just like Li and Lian when they were alive. In winter, the tree is covered with exotic flowers that are bright red and shaped like lotus flowers. People say that the two trees are the incarnations of Lianmu and Honghe. The two trees will never be separated, and the two people have composed a masterpiece with their lives.

The locals named this tree red lotus, which is the red lotus we see today.
