Seed propagation of Koelreuteria paniculata

Fruit picking

The fruits of the Koelreuteria paniculata usually mature from September to October. It is necessary to choose plants with good growth, full fruits and in the prime of growth as the mother trees for seed collection. The fruits should be collected in time before they fall off on their own, but not picked too early, otherwise it will affect the germination rate of the seeds.

Planting treatment

Remove the peel and stalks of the collected fruits, dry them in time, beat them after they crack, and then use the screening method to remove the seeds.

The seeds of Koelreuteria paniculata must be soaked to improve their germination rate.

Seeding management

When sowing Koelreuteria paniculata in autumn, choose land with higher terrain, good drainage, and sunny exposure to the wind. The soil should be loose and breathable, and the land should be level and fine when prepared.

Apply sufficient base fertilizer on the selected land, sow the seeds in rows, and cover them with soil shallowly after sowing to prevent the seeds from drying out and losing water or being harmed by birds and animals. You also need to water the soil once and cover the ground with grass, straw, etc. This can increase the temperature and keep the soil moist.

Thinning management

When the seedlings grow to five to ten centimeters, they should be thinned out. The principle of thinning is to thin out the small and keep the large, and thin out the dense and keep the sparse. It is best to do it on a rainy day.

Fertilization management

After the seedlings emerge from the soil and grow roots, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied during the growing season to promote rapid growth of the seedlings; after autumn, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied to effectively increase the plant's lignification and cold resistance.
