Seabuckthorn propagation method

Seabuckthorn propagation method

Cutting propagation of seabuckthorn

Cutting propagation is the most commonly used method of sea buckthorn propagation. The main reason is that cutting is not only simple and easy, but also has a high survival rate.

First of all, before choosing cuttings, you need to prepare the soil, and also pay attention to the season for cuttings. Generally, it is when it is warmer in spring, and the wounds are easy to heal. After choosing the time, you need to prepare the soil. The soil should be fertile, breathable, and nutritious. If conditions permit, the soil should be sterilized before cuttings. This can remove insect eggs hidden in the soil and weed seeds on the other hand.

The second step is to select cuttings, which are cut from strong and tender mother branches. Generally, each cutting is kept at five to eight centimeters and contains three to five buds.

The third step is to insert the cuttings into the prepared potting soil, then water it sufficiently. Place it in a cool place for maintenance at the beginning. When it is about to take root, you can gradually place the sea buckthorn in the sun.

Layering propagation of seabuckthorn

When layering is used for propagation, horizontal layering is generally used. The best time for layering is early spring. The branches selected are two-year-old branches. The selected 15-centimeter branches are put into sawdust and the temperature is maintained at 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. After the callus tissue grows, it should be taken out and bought into the nursery. In this way, new branches can grow within two weeks. What needs to be paid attention to in this method of propagation is the temperature and the period of propagation. If you are not careful, the survival rate of sea buckthorn will be greatly reduced.

Grafting propagation of seabuckthorn

When grafting, branches are mostly grafted in the form of oblique chopping, which can greatly increase the contact area between the rootstock and the branch during grafting, which is very beneficial to the survival of sea buckthorn. The best time for grafting is also in spring, around March. After selecting the rootstock, cut strong branches and graft them onto the rootstock and wrap them in plastic.
