How to prune sea buckthorn

Pruning of young seabuckthorn trees

First of all, you need to know that, generally speaking, the best time for pruning is in winter. If it is in the Northeast, pruning should be done around March. The reason is that the temperature at this time is just right, and there is little damage to the sea buckthorn after pruning, and the wounds left behind are easier to heal.

There are two main ways to prune young trees. One is to make them appear in the shape of a bush without a main trunk, which can promote the sprouting of side branches. What needs to be noted when pruning is that in the first few years, mainly some dead branches and dead branches should be cut off, while keeping the original shape as much as possible, while removing those branches that affect the growth of sea buckthorn. Later, sea buckthorn can basically survive on its own, which is equivalent to having a certain ability to live independently. The second method is to prune the sea buckthorn into a main trunk shape. In this way, the side branches of the sea buckthorn are mainly cut off, so that the main branches are mainly retained. This type of pruning method is mainly aimed at poor land. Keeping the main branches in poor soil can make the sea buckthorn grow well and improve its vitality.

Pruning of mature seabuckthorn trees

Mature trees can be pruned in winter or in spring. Since they already have the ability to grow independently, there are no strict requirements on the timing of pruning. When pruning, mainly cut off long branches, drooping branches, dry branches, etc. The purpose of pruning at this time is to stabilize the crown of the tree, and the shape can be determined according to your own preferences. It can be based on the main trunk, or it can be in the state of shrubs or other floating branches, etc., and appropriate pinching can also be performed during the shaping.
