How to propagate sea buckthorn by cuttings

Classification of sea buckthorn cuttings

Everyone may have heard of cuttings, but there are also classifications of cuttings, which may confuse everyone. Yes, for sea buckthorn, cuttings can be divided into two types: green branch cuttings and hard branch cuttings, and both cutting methods have their own advantages.

The best time for sea buckthorn cuttings

For green branch cuttings, the best time is around June. The temperature and humidity at this time are more suitable for green branch cuttings. This type of cutting method is mainly for rooting, so it has high requirements for temperature and humidity. Hardwood cuttings do not require a high time, but it is best to do them in the warm spring.

Preparation before sea buckthorn cuttings

Before sea buckthorn cuttings are carried out, three things need to be prepared: soil, cuttings, and water.

First, let’s talk about the soil. The soil requirements for sea buckthorn cuttings are loose and fertile, good air permeability, and the soil is not easy to become compacted. If conditions permit, the soil should be disinfected before cutting. On the one hand, it can remove the weed seeds in the soil, and on the other hand, it can eliminate the insect eggs in the soil. In this way, the chance of sea buckthorn being infected with diseases and pests after it grows up can be greatly reduced.

The second is the selection of cuttings. Cuttings are cut from the sturdy mother branches of sea buckthorn. Generally, one cutting should contain three to five young buds, and the length of each cutting must be between five and eight centimeters.

The last thing is water. Needless to say, after the cuttings are completed, sufficient water must be poured for maintenance.

Specific operation of sea buckthorn cuttings

Insert the selected cuttings into the prepared soil, let the soil cover about one-third of the cuttings, gently pat the soil in the pot with your hands and then water it sufficiently. If you maintain it carefully, it will generally take root in a week.
