Potting and Repotting Cycas Revoluta

Potting and Repotting Cycas Revoluta

Container selection for potted cycads

It is suitable to use clay pots or shallow pots for potted Cycas revoluta. It is best not to use deep pots. The advantages of using a shallow pot are: on the one hand, it highlights the stem of the cycad, giving people a tall visual effect; on the other hand, a shallow pot holds less soil, which can inhibit the excessive growth of leaves. Commonly used containers for potted cycads include clay pots, ceramic pots, plastic pots, wooden barrels, etc.

Soil Treatment for Potted Cycas

Potted cycads have high requirements for soil. Peat soil or humus soil is commonly used, and then an appropriate amount of river sand and a small amount of bone meal are added to mix. Leaf mold, garden soil and pond mud can also be used, and then an appropriate amount of decomposed organic fertilizer can be added to mix. The suitable pH value is about 5-6.5. If the potting soil is too acidic, you can add an appropriate amount of lime powder or wood ash to adjust it. Otherwise, you can add an appropriate amount of sulfur powder, aluminum sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The potting soil must be disinfected before use. Specific measures include steaming the potting soil for 1-2 hours for disinfection, or evenly spraying 40% formalin and then piling it up and covering it with film for disinfection for at least two days.

Potted Cycas revoluta

First, take two broken tiles and place them in the shape of an “in” and place them over the drainage hole of the container. It is best to put a layer of coarse gravel at the bottom of the pot, about 3-5 cm thick. Control the soil covering depth appropriately, preferably just above the root neck. After planting, it is necessary to water it in time to allow it to take root, and then place it in a shaded place for 1-2 weeks, giving it certain light. Generally, normal management can be carried out after 1 month.

Repotting a Potted Cycas Revoluta

Generally speaking, the seedlings should be repotted once a year, the medium-sized seedlings should be repotted once every 2-3 years, and the large seedlings should be repotted once every 4-5 years.

The best time to repot the Cycas revoluta is in early spring, before the new leaves grow out and when the temperature is stable at around 15°C. During the repotting process, the soil around the plant needs to be compacted. If it is a medium or large seedling, the rotten roots and part of the old soil need to be removed, but be careful to avoid breaking the soil. The soil surface after planting should be about 3-5 cm lower than the edge of the pot to ensure space for watering and root expansion.
