Seed propagation of Alstroemeria

Seed propagation of Alstroemeria is usually carried out in winter. Sterilize sand and peat soil at high temperature in a ratio of 1:1 and put them in pots as sowing medium. Sow seeds from mid-October to late November. In the natural low temperature of 0 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius in winter, the seeds gradually wake up.

Move it to 15 to 20 degrees Celsius and the seeds will germinate in about two weeks. The germination rate is over 80 percent. After the seeds germinate, keep the temperature between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Alstroemeria grows quickly. When the six-petaled seedlings grow to 4 to 5 cm, they should be transplanted. The time for transplanting should be from February to March in early spring. It should be noted that care should be taken not to damage the root system during transplanting.

Propagation of Alstroemeria by division

In addition to sowing and propagating, Alstroemeria can also be propagated by division. The time for division and propagation of six-petaled flowers is in October. The division propagation of Alstroemeria is to utilize the ungerminated buds on the rhizomes of Alstroemeria. When the rhizome of the alstroemeria is cut into sections, the latent buds can be stimulated to germinate and new plants can be grown.

The rhizome of Alstroemeria lies horizontally underground, and there are fleshy roots on the rhizome that help the Alstroemeria store water and nutrients. Many hidden buds grow on the horizontal rhizomes of the six-petaled flower. When conditions are suitable, the horizontal rhizomes will stretch in the soil, and at the same time some of the hidden buds will gradually germinate until they grow into flower branches.

Before transplanting the plants, make sure the soil is loose and neither dry nor wet. When dividing the plant, cut off the upper part of the plant 30 cm from the ground. Then dig up the plant, being careful to avoid damaging the roots as much as possible. Gently shake the soil around the plant and plant the rhizomes in the prepared seedbed. If the plant is grown as cut flowers, the row spacing during cultivation is generally 40cm×50cm.
