How to propagate peach by grafting

Selection of scion and rootstock

Generally speaking, the mother peach tree should be healthy, free of pests and diseases, and of good quality. In addition, the new and sturdy branches of the year should be selected as scion. The rootstock selected for grafting is generally beech.

Specific method of peach grafting

The grafting of peach trees is usually done by bud grafting or branch grafting. In summer bud grafting, you must first cut the buds, peel the bark on the stem of the rootstock, then cut the scion, which is the leaf, leaving the petiole, and cut with a knife under the bud of the scion. It should be noted that the inside of the bud should have a wood layer and the stem should be three to five centimeters from the ground. Then choose the vertical part on the north side of the trunk, cut off the bark, and insert the bud into the rootstock. At this time, you must pay special attention to leaving no gaps at the cut of the rootstock. For this reason, you can wrap the lower part of the bud with tape several times to firmly combine it and prevent it from drying out.

Peach bud grafting time

The best time for peach grafting in the south is June and July, while in the north it is July and August.

Management work after grafting of peach

Whether the grafted plant has survived can be determined about ten days after the peach bud grafting. If the petiole turns yellow and falls off, it means the plant has survived. If it turns black, it has not survived. After the surviving seedlings sprout, the tape should be removed and the stockpiles should be cut. After the plants germinate, the stockpiles must be wiped off and fertilizers should be applied in time. It is best to apply compound fertilizers, which can promote the lignification of the new shoots of the scion, thereby enhancing the cold resistance. In addition, in order to prevent and control pests, you can spray 2000 times of dimethoate solution.
