Winter wheat refers to a variety of wheat that is sown in the fall, survives the cold winter months, and then matures and is harvested in the spring and summer. This wheat variety has good cold resistance and can survive low temperatures in winter. So when is the sowing time for winter wheat? Winter wheat sowing time The sowing time of winter wheat varies from region to region, but generally follows certain climate and seasonal patterns. In my country, the sowing time of winter wheat is mainly concentrated in autumn, and the specific time is as follows: Huanghuai and northern winter wheat areas: including Shandong, Henan (except Xinyang), central and southern Hebei, northern Jiangsu, northern Anhui, southwestern Shanxi and Guanzhong area of Shaanxi. Winter wheat in this area is generally planted in early to mid-October and harvested in late May to early to mid-June of the following year. The suitable sowing period is generally from late September to early October in the northern winter wheat area, from October 5 to 15 in the northern and central Huanghuai winter wheat area, and no later than October 20. The suitable sowing period in the southern part of the Huanghuai winter wheat area is October 10 to 20, and no later than October 30. Winter wheat area in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River: including the areas south of the Huaihe River in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, most of Hubei, and Xinyang, Henan. Wheat is mostly sown from late October to early to mid-November, and harvested from late May to early June of the following year. Southwestern winter wheat area: including Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, southern Shaanxi and western Hubei, wheat is mostly sown from late October to early November and harvested in mid-to-late May of the following year. Wheat varieties with stronger spring characteristics should be sown later, while varieties with weaker spring characteristics should be sown earlier. Northwest winter wheat area: including Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, etc. Winter wheat is usually sown in mid-to-late September and harvested from late June to early July of the following year. Dryland wheat is generally sown from September 20 to 30, and irrigated land wheat is sown from October 1 to 15 (irrigated land wheat in northern Xinjiang is sown from September 20 to October 5). In addition, the specific sowing time in different regions will be adjusted appropriately according to the climatic conditions and agricultural technical guidance of the year. For example, the suitable sowing time for wheat in Shandong Province is generally from October 1 to October 10 in eastern, central and northern Shandong, and the best sowing time is from October 3 to October 8. The suitable time for sowing winter wheat in Hebei Province is October 8 to 18 in the southern wheat-growing areas, October 5 to 13 in the central wheat-growing areas, October 1 to 8 in the northern wheat-growing areas, and September 26 to October 5 in the eastern Jidong wheat-growing areas. Difference Between Winter Wheat and Spring Wheat 1. Sowing time Winter wheat is usually planted in the fall, and the specific time varies from region to region, generally between September and November. Spring wheat is sown in spring, usually from March to May, depending on local climatic conditions. 2. Growth cycle Winter wheat has a long growth cycle, from sowing in autumn to harvesting in the following summer, with the entire cycle lasting about 230 days. The growth cycle of spring wheat is relatively short, from sowing in spring to harvesting in autumn, the entire cycle is about 90 to 120 days. 3. Cold resistance Winter wheat has good cold resistance and can survive low temperatures in winter, making it suitable for areas with long and cold winters. Spring wheat has relatively poor cold resistance and is mainly adapted to areas with shorter or less cold winters. 4. Adapt to the climate Winter wheat is adapted to temperate regions, especially those with lower winter temperatures, such as North China and East China. Spring wheat is adapted to areas with warmer climates or shorter winters, such as Northeast and Northwest China. 5. Harvest time Winter wheat is generally harvested from May to July of the following year, depending on the variety and region. Spring wheat is usually harvested in the fall, roughly from July to September. 6. Variety characteristics There are many varieties of winter wheat, including winter and semi-winter varieties, which have a certain tolerance to low temperatures. There are relatively few spring wheat varieties, which are usually spring varieties with weaker tolerance to low temperatures. 7. Planting area In China, the main growing areas of winter wheat include the Huanghuaihai Plain, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, etc. The main spring wheat growing areas include the Northeast, Northwest and other regions. In general, the sowing time of winter wheat needs to take into account local climate conditions, soil conditions and the crop growth cycle to ensure that the crop can safely survive the winter and obtain a good harvest in the following year.
