How to change the soil and pot of azalea

Effects and requirements of changing soil and pots for azalea

Azalea is a deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family. Its varieties include spring azalea, summer azalea, and western azalea. Spring azalea is further divided into two types: large leaves and large flowers and small leaves and small flowers. Azaleas need to be repotted after two or three years of cultivation. It is suitable to repot in early spring or late autumn when the temperature is suitable for root recovery.

Function : The reason why azalea needs to be repotted is that the nutrients in the pot are in short supply, so the pot and soil need to be changed frequently to supplement and improve the nutrition so that it can grow healthily and bloom luxuriantly.

Requirements : It is best to repot azaleas in spring and autumn. The suitable temperature for growth is 12-25 degrees. It should be protected from the sun and shaded in summer, and kept warm in winter.

Methods, steps and precautions for changing soil and pots for azalea

Repotting : Stop watering the azalea for 2 days before removing it from the pot. Lay the pot horizontally and tap it to separate it. Remove the old soil around the roots of the plant and cut off the old, rotten, and diseased roots of the azalea.

Prepare the soil: Use loose and breathable leaf mold and sandy soil as the new culture soil for azalea, add base fertilizer and use a low ceramic pot.

Planting : Choose a clay pot of the right size for the azalea, put a tile at the bottom of the pot, and cover it with a layer of culture soil. Put the azalea in the pot, straighten the position and let the roots spread out, compact the culture soil, and water it.

Maintenance tips for azalea after changing soil

Watering : After the azalea's soil is changed, it has many capillary roots. If the soil is moist for a long time, the capillary roots will be suffocated and rot. Just keep the soil slightly moist without water accumulation.

Fertilization : After changing the soil, it is recommended to use ferrous sulfate and irrigate the roots of the azalea once a month. It can improve the alkaline soil and enhance the photosynthesis ability of the leaves.

Light : After changing the soil, azalea is suitable for growing in a semi-shady environment. It cannot adapt to direct sunlight. It is best to place it in a location with scattered light or under the shade of trees. If there is good ventilation, it will grow better.
