What are the propagation methods of bulbous begonia

Seed propagation of bulbous begonia

Choose spring or autumn sowing according to the specific variety. Because the seeds of bulbous begonia are very small, they need to be evenly mixed with fine soil and then sown in a shallow pot. There is no need to cover the soil after sowing. The soil for sowing can be a mixture of leaf mold, peat, river sand, etc. It is best to use the immersion method for the first watering. The specific steps are as follows: pour clean water from the hole at the bottom of the pot upwards and let it penetrate into the surface of the pot to moisten it. Then cover it with glass and place it in a semi-shaded place. There is no need to water it every day, just keep the soil moist. It will germinate in about 3 weeks at a temperature of around 23℃. After the seedlings emerge, you can remove the glass and gradually increase the light. When the seedlings grow two true leaves, they can be thinned out. When they have four true leaves, they can be transplanted into small pots. Generally, they need to be repotted 2 or 3 times step by step. It takes about 6-7 months from sowing to flowering.

Tuber propagation of bulbous begonia

Please note that tubers older than 3 years old should not be used as materials for tuber propagation. Before the tubers sprout, use a sharp knife to cut them along the top. Each tuber needs to retain 1-2 buds, and apply wood ash or sulfur powder on the cut to accelerate its drying and avoid infection by pathogens. Wait for it to dry slightly before planting. The planting depth should be such that part of the tuber is slightly exposed to the soil, otherwise it is prone to rot.

Cutting propagation of bulbous begonia

Cutting propagation is mainly suitable for the reproduction of double-flowered varieties that are not easy to produce seeds. It is best to do it in June or July. Choose strong branches with terminal buds, about 10 cm in length, remove the leaves at the base, and keep some of the top leaves. After the cut is dry, insert it into a wet sand bed and shade it. The ambient temperature after cutting is about 20°C and the air humidity is about 80%. It will take root after 3 weeks.
