How to prune peach blossoms

How to prune peach blossoms

Cup-shaped crown

This pruning method should be used for one-year grafted seedlings. After the seedlings are transplanted, the main trunk should be left at a height of 1 meter, and then the top branches are cut off, and strong buds should be left at the cut. Those below 1 meter can be selected as main trunks and main branches.

Leave new branches about 40 cm from the ground as the first main branch; then select new branches about 30 cm above the first main branch as the second main branch; finally, use the new branches pulled out from the cut buds as the third main branch.

When pruning, cut off the upright branches on the main branches and the sprouting branches on the main trunk to prevent them from affecting the growth and formation of the main branches.

When pruning again in the second year, each main branch should be shortened, and strong buds should be left at the cut to cultivate the main branches for extended growth.

Happy-shaped crown

Choose grafted seedlings that have grown for one year and cut them at 60 cm as the main branches after transplanting. Generally, three main branches can be selected, and the main branches will grow radially.

After determining the main branch, all other branches should be cut off.

When pruning in the winter of the second year, the main branches can be shortened at 50 cm to promote the growth of side branches.

The remaining extra branches can be cut off, thus forming a natural heart-shaped crown.
