Cultivation methods and precautions of wintersweet

Watering method

Since ancient times, wintersweet has been recognized as a kind of plum blossom that can withstand the test of severe cold and heat, so it should be a very easy-to-grow flower. People often say that wintersweet flowers cannot be killed by drought. From this we can see that they have very good drought resistance. Therefore, you don’t need to water the potted plants at home too much. Just a little water is enough as long as the soil in the pot is not dry and cracked.

Fertilization method

Any plant needs certain nutrients to grow well. Although wintersweet can withstand the test of severe cold, it still needs fertilizer. In fact, it is a kind of flower that likes fertilizer very much. Therefore, when breeding, it is best to choose fertile land, but not too fertile. Fertilize it regularly every time.

Pruning methods

The wintersweets that we often see are generally larger trees, and it is okay to plant them outdoors without pruning. But indoor potted plants still need to be shaped regularly. It has a strong ability to branch out, and there is a saying that "Wintersweet has no shortage of branches". Through timely pruning, the wintersweet can grow more strong branches and the number of flowers will also increase.

— Generally, it is advisable to prune in time after the flowers fade and before the leaves sprout, remove dead branches, overcrowded branches, crossed branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, and leave 2 to 3 pairs of buds at the base of one-year-old branches, and remove the upper branches to promote sprouting and branching.

Temperature requirements

Wintersweet likes sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade. Although it can grow in cold winters, it will also freeze if the temperature is too low. It is safe to spend the winter at a temperature of around -15℃. In areas south of Beijing, the temperature needs to be controlled below -10℃ during the flowering period, otherwise the flowers will be damaged by frost.
