The flowers don’t grow big? That's because you don't know how to change the pot! 4 types of pot changing techniques to teach you

Normal growth repotting

1. How to judge whether the plant should be repotted

①Observe the roots of plants

Look at the roots of potted plants. If their roots extend outside the pot, it certainly means that the pot is too small to accommodate the growing root system and needs a larger container with more soil.

②Observe the leaves of plants

If you find that the leaves of the plant are getting smaller and smaller, thinner and lighter in color, just like a person with a pale face and thin body, it means that the soil does not have enough nutrients and needs to be repotted and replenished.

2. Timing of repotting

①It is best to do this in spring and autumn; for some plants, it is also suitable in winter.

② It is best to do this during the plant’s dormant period and early growth stage. Repotting during these two stages will have little effect on plant growth.

③ For plants that are in the seedling stage, do not replace them, because the flowers are already damaged. Replacing them at this time will cause secondary damage and extend the seedling stage indefinitely.

3. Steps of repotting

Materials and tools to prepare before repotting: flower pots, culture soil, pearl stone, gardening shears, shovel, and vermiculite.

① Remove the plant from the pot, gently press the soil at the roots with your hands to loosen the soil, and then sort out the roots in the soil.

② Determine the length of the roots to be retained according to the size of the plant. The larger the plant, the longer the roots should be retained. Generally, it is only necessary to retain a length of about 15 cm from the roots of grass and flowers, and cut off the excess. In addition, dead branches, leaves or diseased parts of the plant should also be cut off.

③ In order to take into account the air permeability and water retention of the new soil, you can mix vermiculite, perlite and culture soil in a ratio of 1:1:3 and use it as the soil for the new pot.

④ Add the mixed soil into the new pot, about 1/3 of the height, compact it slightly with your hands, put the plant in, and then add soil until it is 80% full.

Repotting plants with rotten roots

1. How to judge whether a plant has root rot

① Comparison method to observe leaf color changes

Place flowers of the same family or species together for comparison. If the leaves of one pot of flowers look wilted and lifeless, or if the leaves from the upper part of the plant's roots fall off severely, it means that the flower has been watered too much and has caused root rot.

② Observe whether there are yellow or brown spots on the leaf tips

If there is too much water in the root system, the roots will be unable to breathe, which will cause the roots to rot. In this way, nutrients cannot reach the tips of the leaves directly. This results in the leaf tips not being able to absorb nutrients, causing yellowing.

③Judging whether the roots are rotten by touch

The leaves of foliage plants are generally cool, and you will feel cool when you touch them with your fingers. This shows that the plants are growing well and are full of vitality. If when you touch the leaves, you don't feel cool, but instead feel warm and dry. This phenomenon indicates that the plant has suffered from root burn and root rot.

2. Timing of repotting

If the root rot is severe, the soil in the pot should be replaced immediately.

3. Steps for changing pots

① Remove the plant from the original potting soil, clean the roots, and cut off all rotten roots, leaving no roots.

② After applying carbendazim or other disinfectants on the wound, place the plant in a cool place and wait for it to dry slowly.

③Put a layer of large-grain expanded clay at the bottom of the flowerpot to effectively prevent water accumulation, then sprinkle the prepared loose and breathable soil on it and put the plant back into the pot.

Repotting Black Rot

1. How to judge black rot

Black rot is a fungal disease. Generally, the pathogens of black rot can infect plants and contaminate the soil. Therefore, after discovering black rot, it is best to change the potting soil.

Black rot/rot can manifest in many ways, and by the time you notice it, it’s often too late. Always be wary of discolored areas on the plant, as well as stems and leaves that become soft and mushy.

2. Time to change the soil

The sooner you discover it, the better.

3. Steps for changing pots

① First, you need to cut off all the black rot areas. As long as a little bit is left, it will continue to rot.

② In summer, put it in the sun at 9 o'clock for half an hour when the sunlight is strong enough to disinfect and sterilize it, or apply carbendazim and put it in a cool and ventilated place. Don't rush to put it in the pot. It is better to pot it on the second day.

③Put the prepared expanded clay, humus, etc. into the flowerpot, and then repot the plant!

Pest control repotting

1. Reasons for changing pots

Some pests live in the soil, such as the root mealybug. This type of insect is the most annoying because it is hidden in the soil and cannot be seen. If you find this kind of pest and don't want to spray pesticides, you can only change the pot.

2. When to change the pot

If you have discovered it, change the pot immediately!

3. Steps for changing pots

① The original soil must be discarded and placed far away, or left outdoors in the sun for a few months before use. However, it is not recommended to reuse the soil because it has been contaminated and it is not certain whether it is completely harmless.

② Clean all the roots of the plant, then simply trim them, remove all the old roots and stumps, then soak them in clean water for half an hour and wash them again.

③Then let it air dry for 1-2 days, and put it back into the pot after it is completely dry. New soil must be strictly disinfected before being replaced. For disinfection, it can be placed outside in the sun, scalded with boiling water, or steamed in a pressure cooker.
