Knowledge on cultivation and care of Lycoris

temperature

Many members of the Amaryllis family prefer warm climates, so amaryllis, cleome, spider lily, aster, allium, leek orchid and fireball all belong to this category and are suitable for cultivation on flat land. The suitable temperature for the growth of Lycoris radiata and Clivia is between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, which is more suitable for planting in the north. Clivia should avoid overly humid and hot environments in summer. Daffodils prefer cool weather and can only be planted in winter and spring on flat land; drooping lilies and kangaroo feet are more suitable for planting at medium and high altitudes.

sunshine

Most of the bulbous flowers in the Amaryllis family like to grow in an environment with plenty of sunlight. Full-sun or half-sun environments are very suitable. Insufficient light will cause poor flowering. Chinese daffodils grown in water still need more than two to three hours of sunlight every day, otherwise they will grow too tall and fall over. Clivia prefers a cool environment and should avoid direct sunlight in summer. The best sunshine is between 50% and 70%.

soil

Generally speaking, amaryllis bulbous flowers are not picky about the soil. The soil in the native habitats of many bulbous flowers is very dry and hard, but they still bloom brilliantly. However, if loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter can be provided, it will grow more beautifully. Except for water-loving species such as Crinum and Spider Lily, the soil for general planting should have good drainage, otherwise the bulbs will easily rot. Fertilizer: Bulbous flowers have a long growing season, so sufficient organic fertilizer should be buried before planting, and topdressing should be applied every two months. Homemade compost or three-element fertilizer can be used, and the proportion of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be emphasized to promote bulb development and flowering.

Moisture

The enlarged underground stems of Amaryllis bulbs make them more tolerant of water lack, but they need sufficient water in well-drained soil to grow fully. When the topsoil is dry and grayish white, they should be supplemented with water. When the leaves of Lycoris radiata and Fireball Bloom gradually wither, you should slowly reduce watering. Once they enter the dormant period, no more watering or fertilizing is allowed.

Cultivation time

The suitable cultivation time in Shanghai is from May to November, which can be combined with flowering period control. It is best not to transplant in winter or early spring after the leaves grow. In cold areas, planting should be done in spring. Most varieties prefer a warm climate with the maximum temperature not exceeding 30℃ and the average temperature in ten days being 24℃, which is suitable for the growth of Lycoris radiata. The average daily temperature in winter is above 8℃ and the lowest temperature is 1℃, which does not affect the growth of Lycoris radiata.

Cultivation environment

The planting depth should not be too deep, it is best to have the top of the bulb just buried in the soil surface. It requires well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil or loose culture soil. Apply an appropriate amount of base fertilizer when planting and water thoroughly after planting. During the vegetative growth period, water should be irrigated frequently to keep the soil moist, but water should not accumulate to prevent the bulbs from rotting. Appropriate amount of water must be supplied from 20 days before flowering to the flowering period to achieve uniform flowering and prolong the flowering period.
