Bullfrog breeding methods and techniques

Bullfrog belongs to the class Amphibia, order Anura, and genus Rana of the family Ranidae. At present, bullfrog breeding has become an emerging special economic breeding industry at home and abroad. This amphibian is known for its high comprehensive economic value and is a larger edible frog. Bullfrogs grow quickly, have delicious meat, and are rich in nutrients, especially protein. Let’s learn about the breeding methods and techniques of bullfrogs below.

1. Breeding site

When choosing a bullfrog breeding site, you should fully consider their amphibious living habits and give priority to locations with a quiet environment, sheltered from the wind, sunny, suitable seasons, and convenient transportation. Bullfrog farming has high requirements for water quality, so the site must ensure that there is sufficient and clean water source to facilitate drainage and irrigation. It is best to be close to natural water bodies with good water quality and no pollution, or flowing springs, to facilitate the establishment of breeding ponds.

2. Construction of breeding pond

When building a breeding pond, it is more appropriate to control the area between 1,000 and 2,000 square meters. The pool should be surrounded by a 1.5-meter-high wall made of red bricks, with the bottom of the wall 40 centimeters deep into the ground to prevent bullfrogs from digging and escaping. A 2-meter-wide sloped area should be left between the fence and the edge of the pond, where vegetation or weeds should be planted for bullfrogs to rest and forage, and water lilies should be planted in the corners of the pond. In addition, there should be trees outside the fence to provide shade or shade facilities should be built.

3. Preparation for planting seedlings

Half a month before stocking the seedlings, the frog pond should be disinfected and sprinkled with 50 kilograms of quicklime. After 10 days, the bullfrog seedlings can be released. The stocking density depends on the specifications of the young frogs. 50 young frogs weighing 50 grams can be stocked per square meter, and 20 young frogs weighing 100 grams can be stocked per square meter. Before stocking, young frogs need to be disinfected by soaking in 20 mg/L potassium permanganate solution for 10 minutes.

4. Feeding and management

In terms of feeding and management, bullfrog feed should be a combination of animal bait and compound feed . Animal baits include natural and artificial baits, such as moths, caterpillars, locusts, small fish, earthworms, mealworms , silkworm pupae and animal offal. The compound feed is in the form of expanded granules and is fed three times a day. It is mainly animal bait supplemented with compound feed.

In terms of water quality management, the water depth of the frog pond is maintained at about 40 cm. New water needs to be added or replaced every 7 days. Flowing water is better. Quicklime and bleaching powder are used for disinfection once a month.

Escape prevention measures should be checked daily, especially after heavy rains, to ensure that no bullfrogs have escaped by burrowing.

In terms of disease prevention, common diseases of bullfrogs include red leg disease, bubble disease, skin rot and gastroenteritis. Preventive measures include monthly disinfection, regular water changes and keeping the water clean. For sick frogs, soak them in 2-5% salt water for 15 minutes once a day for 3 consecutive days for treatment.

The above are the key points of bullfrog breeding. When captured and put on the market, bullfrogs grow rapidly. After about 7 months of breeding, a 50-gram young frog can weigh more than 250 grams. At this time, it can be captured and put on the market for sale.
