How to propagate pomegranate flowers by cuttings

Pomegranate cutting time

Pomegranates do not need to be stored before cuttings, they can be picked directly from the tree. As long as the temperature is suitable, it can be done in all seasons. However, due to different regions, the burial methods of cuttings also vary, but in the north it can be done in spring and autumn. Spring is in late March and autumn is from October to November. Comparatively speaking, autumn is better than spring because there are more nutrients in the branches in autumn, the temperature is low and the water is not easy to evaporate, which is conducive to rooting. However, the autumn planting time cannot be too early, as premature sprouts are easily frozen to death.

Pomegranate cutting selection

Choose young branches grown in the current year for cuttings, because the tissue is delicate and the cuttings have strong vitality after survival, but it takes a long time to bear fruit. If you choose overgrown branches or vigorous branches as branches, it will be difficult for them to take root and the fruit will be late. It is best to use branches that are more than 3 years old for small bonsai cuttings at home. After cuttings, they will bloom and bear fruit earlier and are not easy to grow larger, so they are just right to be placed at home.

Generally, gray-white 2-3 year old branches from sturdy trees are selected. The diameter of the limbs and branches is about 0.5-1 cm and the length is 15-30 cm.

Pomegranate cutting method

Fill a container (flower pot) with soil, water it thoroughly, and set it aside for later use.

Prune the branches, cut the surface into a horseshoe shape, and cut off some of the leaves to avoid consuming too much nutrients.

Insert the branches into the pot, cover with a plastic bag to keep it moist, and place in semi-shade.

It will take root and grow tender leaves in about a month. When it grows 5 to 6 leaves, you can dig it out and replant it!

Slowly grow your pomegranate into a beautiful little bonsai.
