How to care for and water Anthurium

Anthurium is also known as flamingo, anthurium and red anthurium . It is a perennial evergreen herb of the Araceae family and the Anthurium genus. It is a common ornamental flower that can be grown as fresh cut flowers or in potted plants . So what are the maintenance and watering methods of Anthurium? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Soil selection

It is best to choose loose, breathable and well-drained soil for growing Anthurium. When raising fish at home, you can prepare the soil yourself. Generally, you can mix crushed pond mud, leaf mold, fine river sand, wood ash and some superphosphate evenly.

2. Lighting requirements

Anthurium requires a certain amount of scattered light, but cannot be exposed to strong light, otherwise the leaves will easily discolor and burn, seriously affecting its ornamental value.

3. Temperature control

The most suitable growth temperature for Anthurium is 14-35℃. In winter, the temperature is below 10℃ and Anthurium is easily frostbitten, so warm it up in time. When the temperature is above 35℃ in summer, sprinkle water around the anthurium to cool it down.

4. Watering method

Anthurium has a high demand for water, but is not tolerant to waterlogging. Usually in spring and autumn, water the plants about every 3-5 days, in summer, water them about every 2-3 days, and in winter, water them about once a week. When watering, try to pour slowly along the edge of the pot. Also, spray water on the leaves and surrounding areas frequently to keep the air moist, so that the leaves are bright green.

5. Fertilization points

Anthurium likes fertilizer, but cannot tolerate concentrated fertilizer. Do not apply fertilizer when the temperature is low in late autumn, winter, and early spring. Start applying top dressing after new leaves grow in spring. Apply 10 times liquid fertilizer mixed with an equal amount of 1000 times potassium dihydrogen phosphate liquid, or 1000 times "Hua Duoduo" general fertilizer once every 10 days. Stop fertilizing when the temperature drops to 15℃ in late autumn

6. Proper pruning

Generally speaking, during the growth of Anthurium, the petiole at the base gradually degenerates, and the stipules can be cut off in time when they become dry. When the pedicels turn yellow after flowering, they must be cut off as soon as possible from the base, leaving a 2 cm protective stump.

In general, although the maintenance of anthuriums requires certain skills and patience, as long as you master the basic maintenance and watering methods, you can ensure the healthy growth of anthuriums and maintain good ornamental value.
