How long is the life span of a forsythia tree? When does it start to bear fruit?

1. How long is the life span of the Forsythia tree?

Forsythia is a deciduous shrub of the genus Forsythia in the family Oleaceae. Its life span is between 35-40 years. If used for gardening purposes, the lifespan will be shorter, with the life limit being between 25-30 years. It blooms relatively early, before the leaves open. It is considered to be one of the earliest shrubs to bloom in the northern region.

2. How many years does Forsythia suspensa start to bear fruit?

It usually takes more than three years for the one-year-old Forsythia suspensa seedlings to start bearing fruit, and the initial amount of fruit is relatively small. It will take 8 to 10 years of care to reach its peak fruit-bearing period, and the amount of fruit will gradually increase. Each plant can produce 15-20 kg of green currant, which will gradually generate profits.

3. What to do if Forsythia does not bear fruit

There are two main reasons why Forsythia does not bear fruit. One is caused by self-pollination. The fruit setting rate of self-pollination is very low, only about 4%. Try to cross-pollinate as much as possible, so that the fruit setting rate will increase. Specifically, when planting, long and short styles should be planted alternately, so that pollination can be better in the later stage and more fruits can be produced. The second is caused by untimely pruning. Especially in the spring of each year, pruning must be carried out in time to trim off the overgrown branches, save nutrient consumption, and make the nutrients more concentrated. This will increase the fruit setting rate and promote more flowering and more fruiting.
