How to propagate white palm

How to propagate white palm

Common propagation methods for Anthurium include sowing and division, and tissue culture is used for large-scale planting.

Propagation by division

Division time

The division propagation of Anthurium should avoid low and high temperatures. Other than that, it can be carried out throughout the year, but spring and autumn are most suitable. People usually divide the plants in conjunction with repotting from March to May.

Steps for division

Select healthy plants that are about two years old, remove them from the pots before they sprout in early spring, remove the soil from the roots, and trim the rhizomes.

Lift the whole plant out of the pot and cut the rhizomes from the base of the plant. Each plant should have at least 3 to 4 leaves. Be careful not to damage the roots. After division, plant them separately and then place them in semi-shaded place to recover.

Notes on division

The pot should be changed once every early spring before new buds sprout in large numbers. It is most appropriate to divide the plant at this time. Depending on the growth condition of the plant, the plant can be divided and planted in a larger pot, which is more conducive to the development of the root system and healthy growth.

After division, you should frequently loosen the soil in the pot to keep it loose and breathable. As long as the temperature is suitable, it can grow well throughout the year.

Seed propagation

Seed propagation of white calla lilies is rarely used because its seeds are not easy to obtain. It takes 10 to 15 months from pollination to seed maturity. It is often used for the preservation of native varieties and the breeding of hybrid varieties.

Sowing method

Disinfection: Sowing is usually done in a greenhouse, and the soil is first disinfected. Expose the planting soil to the sun or water it with disinfectant.

Seed soaking: Soak the seeds in 40℃ warm water for 10 hours before sowing, and sow them after they are slightly dry in a cool place.

Sowing: Sow the seeds in greenhouse pots, then cover them with a thin layer of soil and keep the soil moist by spraying or soaking the pots. When sowing, control the temperature at 25~28 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is not up to standard, cover the mouth of the pot with plastic film to maintain the humidity above 80%.

Post-sowing care

Most varieties will germinate 20 to 25 days after sowing. However, if the temperature is not suitable or the room temperature is too low, it will not only affect germination, but also cause the seeds to rot. Therefore, control the temperature at around 20℃ and control the water appropriately.

After germination, when the seedlings grow 1 to 2 true leaves, they can be planted in pots. After planting, spray with dilute liquid fertilizer to make the seedlings grow healthily.

The white calla lily propagated by seeds will not bloom until 3 to 6 years of care, but it will have ornamental value after 2 to 3 years.

Tissue culture

Tissue culture is the main method for large-scale propagation of Spathiphyllum. The home's environmental and technical environment does not meet the requirements. The editor will give a brief introduction here for your reference as common sense!

Explant sterilization

Tissue culture mainly involves soaking the stem tips, stem segments, leaves, inflorescences and other explants of Spathiphyllum in alcohol for 30 seconds, and then soaking them in 0.1% mercuric chloride for 10 minutes for disinfection. After disinfection, MS (the name of the nutrient solution) is used as the basic culture medium, and hormones are used to induce bud growth, and roots will soon grow.

Rooting and refining

When the roots have been cultured for about 30 days and the seedlings are over 2.0 cm tall, they can be taken out of the bottle after being hardened under natural light for another 10 days. The main purpose of seedling hardening is to enhance the disease resistance of the plants and improve their adaptability to the external environment.

Transplanting

When transplanting, use tweezers to take the test tube seedlings out of the culture bottle, wash off the root culture medium, and plant them in a substrate mixed with half sand and half perlite. Pay attention to watering, shading and insulation, the survival rate can generally reach more than 95%. It can be potted for cultivation about 40 days after transplanting.

Tissue culture of anthurium seems very far away from us, but maybe the potted anthurium in your home is obtained in this way!
