Cicada breeding and reproduction techniques

Cicada breeding and reproduction techniques

Cicada is also called cicada, cicada monkey, etc. There is a custom of eating cicadas and their nymphs in many areas of our country. It is especially popular in Shandong Province, resulting in a shortage of cicadas. Therefore, artificial breeding is now being developed. Below I will introduce to you the cultivation and reproduction techniques of cicadas.

Cicada breeding technology

1. Obtaining seed sources

It can be collected naturally in the field, and eggs, nymphs and adults can all be collected as seed sources. All insect stages can be collected from July to September; August to September is the best season for collecting nymphs; September is the best time to collect cicada egg branches , and they can be collected all year round. Nymphs can be collected by shining a flashlight at the base of the tree trunk between 7 and 12 p.m.; there are many ways to catch adult cicadas on trees, including using a fire to lure them at night.

2. Planting trees

First of all, seedlings of broad-leaved trees should be cultivated. You can plant willows, poplars, elms, etc. The trunks should be shorter and covered with nylon nets.

3. Add eggs

In summer, the adult cicadas collected are placed on the trees in the net house to lay eggs, and then the eggs are collected; in autumn, the branches with cicada eggs are also buried at the roots of the trees in the net house. You can also raise cicadas in combination with planting fruit trees.

4. Feeding and management

For the growth and reproduction of cicadas, high-quality feed should be provided first. You can plant poplars, willows and some fruit trees, and intercrop root plants such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, etc. to provide feed and environmental conditions for cicadas and their larvae.

5. Notes

Check the screen regularly to see if it is damaged to prevent the cicada from escaping. Microorganisms such as Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Entomogenes fusiformis ( Cicada fungus ) can cause harm to cicadas, so they must be protected. During the emergence period, egg stage and outbreak period of mature nymphs, they will have natural enemies such as ants and red flower stink bugs, so strict precautions must be taken. Strong ammonia and other substances can be used for soil treatment.

Cicada breeding techniques

In a plastic box that is 70 cm long, 40 cm wide and 20 cm high, 5 to 10 cm thick fine dry sand can be spread on the bottom, and the egg branches can be placed vertically or horizontally in bundles on it. Use a small sprayer to spray mist continuously to maintain the air humidity so that excess water droplets are absorbed by the fine sand at the bottom. The hatching status of the eggs should be checked continuously during the process. If nymphs are found to be active, they can be placed in the breeding place together with branches and fine sand.
