How to Care for Ruby

How to Care for Ruby

1. Maintenance methods

1. Soil: Ruby grows best in well-drained, ventilated soil. You can mix coal slag, peat soil and perlite. The soil should not be too sticky, otherwise the roots will not be able to grow.

2. Sunlight: Ruby has very strict requirements on light. Insufficient light will cause its leaves to turn green, while too much light will cause them to turn black or even develop black spots. Therefore, shade is required in the summer and long periods of sunlight are required in other seasons.

3. Watering: Ruby prefers a humid environment. Watering should be more frequent on a daily basis, but the amount of water should be controlled. Water 1-2 times a day in summer, and spray water to keep it moist. In winter, less water is needed, and watering should be stopped in an environment of -5℃.

4. Fertilization: The growth of ruby cannot be separated from sufficient nutrients. Fertilize frequently during its growth period, applying a thin layer of cake fertilizer water once every 1-2 weeks. If the temperature in winter is suitable and it continues to grow, you can also apply appropriate fertilizer. If the temperature is too low, do not fertilize.

2. Breeding techniques

1. Cutting: Cutting is generally carried out in May and June. Cut a stem section with leaves and insert it into peat soil. Then water it thoroughly and cover it with plastic film. It will take root in about 3 weeks.

2. Division: Division is carried out in spring. After pinching, its branches will grow better and form clusters. In the spring of the second year, division can be carried out.

3. Pest and disease control

1. Disease: Leaf spot is a common disease of ruby. Diseased plants will have black spots on their leaves. The diseased leaves need to be removed and sprayed with carbendazim for prevention and control.

2. Pests: The main pest of ruby is scale insect. Pests can be captured manually or killed with chlorpyrifos. Then place the plant in a well-ventilated place to help it recover quickly.
