Leek planting time and method

Leek planting time and method

Leek planting time

If you want to plant leeks, you can actually do it all year round. The principle of planting is that it is better to plant early in spring rather than late. The sowing amount in summer should be one-third larger than that in spring, and the amount of seeds planted in autumn should be twice that in spring. The main planting seasons are spring and autumn, and the leek yield in these two seasons will be greater.

Leek planting method

1. Seed treatment

When planting leeks, you must choose healthy, disease-free seeds. The seeds should be round and plump in appearance, without obvious lesions or insect bites. Then put them in clean water and add some nutrient solution. Leave them for about 3-5 days, maintain a good ventilation and air permeable environment, avoid direct sunlight, and they will germinate in about 5 days.

2. Prepare the soil

The soil used to plant leeks must maintain good water permeability. Generally, humus soil, garden soil, pond mud, fine sand, etc. are evenly mixed, and finally some decomposed farmyard manure is added as base fertilizer. Such soil is loose and porous, with good drainage and air permeability, which is suitable for the growth and development of leeks.

3. Planting and maintenance

Sow the seeds that have been soaked and germinated into the soil evenly, with a certain distance between the seeds, then cover with a thin layer of soil and water until the soil is moist. When the seedlings are 5 cm tall, reduce the amount of watering appropriately, start top dressing when they are 10 cm tall, and start controlling water and pulling out weeds when they are higher than 15 cm.

Things to note when planting chives

Chives need to be fertilized appropriately according to their growth conditions. For seedlings shortly after planting, some thin fertilizer can be applied to promote root growth. When new leaves grow out after the leek seedlings are planted, diammonium phosphate can be applied. When leeks enter the harvest season, top dressing should also be applied after each harvest.
