Difference Between Fir and Pine

Difference Between Fir and Pine

1. Difference of blades

The most obvious difference between the two is in the leaves. The leaves of the fir tree are arranged in spirals, not in clusters. The shape is scaly, lanceolate or strip-shaped, and the leaves on the same tree are almost the same shape. The leaves of pine trees are needle-shaped, usually consisting of two needles, but a few have three needles in a bundle. They grow outward in clusters and have tiny serrations on the edges.

2. The difference between flowers

The flowers of the fir tree are unisexual and monoecious. The male flowers are small, sometimes solitary and sometimes in panicles, and belong to the genus Metasequoia. The female flowers are terminal or grow on the top of last year's branches and belong to the genus Cunninghamia. The male flowers of pine trees grow on the lower part of new branches, usually in clusters. The female flowers grow at the top of new branches. After pollination is completed in the current year, they will quickly grow into cones in the second year.

3. Wood Difference

In addition to the appearance, the wood materials of the two are also different. Fir trees grow very fast, especially in the southern regions, and can mature into timber in a short time. Although wood is light, it has good toughness. Pine trees grow relatively slowly and their wood is harder. It contains pine resin and has a pine oil smell.
