The difference between Cryptomeria and Fir

1. Difference in appearance

Cryptomeria fortunei is a tall tree that can grow up to 48 meters. The bark is reddish brown and fibrous, and the large branches are nearly whorled, spreading flat or obliquely. The twigs are usually drooping and green in color.

The fir is slightly shorter than the former, about 30 meters high. The bark is gray-brown in color and usually breaks off in long strips. The large branches are flat, the small branches are almost opposite and green.

2. The difference between cones

The cones of Cryptomeria fortunei are oblate or spherical, with a diameter of about 1.2-2 cm. There are about 20 seed scales, and there is a triangular, separated bract tip in the middle or lower part of the back of the scale. The seeds are brown in color and nearly oval in shape.

The cones of fir are oval in shape, larger than the former, with a diameter of about 3-4 cm, with a hard thorn-like tip and serrated edges. The seeds are dark brown in color and are rectangular or oblong in shape.
