The flower of Magnolia tianmu is red or light pink, with 9 tepals, which are oblanceolate or spoon-shaped, about 5-5.6 cm long, and the filaments are purple-red. The flowering period is from April to May.

The flower of Magnolia grandiflora is white, with 9-12 tepals, which are obovate, about 6-10 cm long, and the filaments are flat and purple. The flowering period is from May to June.
