How to grow bougainvillea

How to grow bougainvillea

1. Soil

The soil for Bougainvillea needs to be loose and well-drained. The soil should be loosened continuously during planting to avoid soil caking. It is difficult for it to survive in alkaline and heavy clay soil. Generally, it is cultivated in soil with a ratio of 4:4:2 of humus, garden soil and sand, or pond mud is dried and some coal cake residue is added as culture soil. It has a well-developed root system and it is recommended to repot it once a year.

2. Lighting

Bougainvillea is native to Africa and is a light-loving plant that requires sufficient light during the growing season, otherwise the plant will grow weak. In winter, it should be placed in a south-facing window with at least 8 hours of sunlight, otherwise the leaves will easily fall off. During the winter dormancy period, the plant is insensitive to light and the light can be reduced.

3. Temperature

Bougainvillea likes warmth and light. The suitable temperature for its growth is 15-30℃. It can withstand high temperatures of around 35℃ in summer, but when the temperature is too high, it is necessary to spray water and ventilate it in time. The temperature should be maintained at no less than 5℃ in winter, otherwise it will be forced to enter a dormant period.

4. Moisture

When watering, "don't water unless the soil is dry, and water thoroughly when you do." Water should be controlled before flowering. Start controlling watering in September, and water after the soil in the pot is dry and the branches and leaves are drooping. Water normally after half a month. Do not apply fertilizer during water control period.

5. Fertilization

During the peak growing season from April to July, apply fertilizer every 7-10 days. Use 10-20% decomposed bean cake, rapeseed cake water or human manure water as fertilizer. After August, use phosphorus fertilizer as the main fertilizer, apply fertilizer once every 10 days, and use 20% decomposed chicken, duck, pigeon manure, fish offal and other liquid fertilizers per plant. After the flowering period in October, fertilize once every half a month.
