How to propagate asparagus fern by cuttings?

Asparagus fern , also known as cloud pine, is named for its elegant posture, bamboo-like branches and evergreen leaves all year round. Asparagus fern is a favorite indoor plant in many families. Let’s learn together how to propagate Chinese asparagus bamboo by cuttings.

1. Cutting time

Asparagus fern cuttings can be taken at any time of the year, but the ideal temperature range is 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.

2. Processing of cuttings

Choose those asparagus fern branches that have grown for a long time and have a higher degree of lignification as cuttings. Gently cut a small hole where the branch connects to the root, and let it dry in a ventilated place for half a day. Afterwards, wrap the cut with moss and keep it moist. About half a month later, when healing tissue forms at the incision, you can remove the moss and cut the branches, retaining two main branches and two-thirds of the side branches.

3. Preparation before cutting

Choose nutrient soil that is rich in humus, loose in texture and well-drained. Prepare cloth bags that are 8-10 cm long and 6 cm wide, one bag for each cutting. Place the soil into a cloth bag and poke a small hole in the center of the bag surface with a stick.

4. Cutting process

Insert the cuttings into the holes to a depth of about 2 cm and lightly compact the soil around them. Arrange the cloth bags with cuttings along the edge of the flower pot and place a wide-mouthed glass bottle in the center. Use a 60-70 cm long gauze tape to wrap around the outside of the cutting bag, and then place both ends of the gauze tape into the glass bottle. Fill the cutting pot with soil, make sure the bottle mouth is slightly above the soil surface, water it thoroughly, and make sure there is enough water in the glass bottle for the cuttings to absorb during the cutting period.
