How to propagate Begonia by cuttings?

Begonia is a plant of the Begoniaceae family, known for its glossy green leaves and bright red flowers . This plant is not only easy to care for, but also has an extremely long flowering period and can continue to bloom even in low temperature conditions. Begonia is usually propagated by cuttings, which has a high survival rate and quick results. Let’s learn how to propagate Begonia by cuttings.

1. Cutting method

Choosing branches: Select healthy branches, retain three nodes, and remove aerial roots and leaves to reduce water evaporation.

Prepare the substrate: Use chopsticks or bamboo sticks to make small holes in the substrate, avoiding direct insertion to protect fragile branches.

Inserting branches: After inserting the branches into the substrate, gently press the surrounding soil to ensure that the branches are in full contact with the substrate.

2. Precautions

Environmental conditions: Cuttings can be carried out in all seasons, but the survival rate is higher when the temperature is above 0℃. Temperatures above 10°C promote rooting, and the rooting rate is fastest at 20°C. Avoid environments above 30°C to prevent black rot. Provide bright diffuse light and good ventilation.

Branch selection: Both new and old branches can be used for cuttings. Old branches are stronger and will bloom faster after they survive.

Substrate selection: The substrate should be loose, such as river sand, vermiculite, and perlite , to facilitate later transplanting and maintenance.

Disinfection: Use carbendazim or potassium permanganate solution to disinfect branches and substrates to reduce the risk of black rot.

3. Management after cutting

Keep the substrate moist and avoid waterlogging. It will take about a week for roots to grow in an environment of 20℃.

4. Transplanting and Planting

Soil selection: Choose loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil.

Prevent root damage: Try to minimize damage to the root system when transplanting and retain part of the original substrate.

Water thoroughly: Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots fit into the new soil.

5. Daily Management

Light: Avoid direct sunlight, provide bright diffuse light.

Humidity: Keep the air moist, avoid water accumulation at the roots, and spray water regularly to increase humidity.

Nutrients: Apply compound fertilizer and high-phosphorus and potassium fertilizer regularly to promote flower bud differentiation.

In general, the survival rate of Begonia cuttings is high and it is suitable to be carried out in an environment above 5℃. Pay attention to disinfection when cutting to avoid bacterial infection. In daily maintenance, light and humidity control are key, and reasonable fertilization helps to maintain continuous flowering. With careful care, the Begonia can become a beautiful feature of your home, blooming beautiful flowers all year round.
