The morphology of peony and tree peony

blade

The leaves of peony are wider, while those of peony are narrower; the leaves of peony are green on the front and light yellow on the back, while the leaves of peony are dark green; there is white powder on the lower surface of the leaves of peony, while the leaves of peony are dense, bright in color, and have a waxy luster. The leaves of peonies are mostly doubly-tripleted pinnate leaves.

Flowers

The flowers of peony grow at the top of branches and are mostly solitary with a longer diameter of twenty centimeters, while the flowers of medicinal peonies mostly grow in clusters of several flowers with a diameter of about fifteen centimeters. There are many shapes of peony flowers, including single petal, lotus, chrysanthemum, rose, crown, hydrangea, etc., while peony flowers do not have so many shapes. The colors of peony flowers are richer than those of medicinal peonies, and years of artificial cultivation have made the varieties of peonies more abundant.

Physiological aspects of peony and tree peony flowers

Flowering period

The flowering period of peony is earlier than that of peonies. Peonies usually bloom in mid-to-late April, while peonies bloom in early to mid-May. Their flowering periods differ by about half a month. Basically, it can be said that there are peonies in spring and peonies in summer.

Fundamental Difference

Peony is a deciduous shrub and a woody plant that can grow up to more than two meters in height, while peony is a perennial herb that is no more than one meter in height.

The most obvious difference

By the time winter comes, the old branches of the peonies will remain on the ground, while the above-ground parts of the peonies will all wither in winter.
