The sunflower, also known as barbata or pine leaf peony , is known for its vigorous vitality. This plant prefers warm and dry climates and is extremely sensitive to cold and excess moisture. Sunflowers usually bloom when the sun is full, and on cloudy days or when the light is weak in the morning and evening, the flowers will bloom less or not at all. Single-petal sunflowers are easy to propagate by sowing and have a high germination rate. Double-petaled sunflowers and perennial sunflowers are more suitable for propagation through cuttings, and this method is also applicable to single-petaled sunflowers. Let’s learn about the method and time of sunflower cuttings. 1. Cutting time and branch selection Sunflower cuttings can be carried out in spring, summer and autumn. Choose healthy, fresh sunflower branches of moderate length. Sunflowers of different colors can be planted in the same flowerpot to increase the ornamental value. When choosing branches, avoid using dry or weak branches. 2. Prepare the potting soil and branches Choose a suitable small flowerpot and fill it with loose, breathable sandy soil. You can add an appropriate amount of sand or vermiculite to improve soil drainage. Cut the branches into 3 to 4 cm sections to promote fuller plant shape and more abundant flowers. Allow the cut to dry slightly before grafting. 3. Cutting operation First, water the potting soil thoroughly, then insert the dried branches into the soil to a depth of about 1 cm. After cuttings, spray some water to keep the soil moist. Avoid watering on the first day, place the pot under diffuse light, and start watering normally on the second day. After a week, as the root system develops, gradually increase the light and carry out routine maintenance. Be careful to avoid strong direct sunlight and stagnant water to prevent branch rot. 4. Management after cutting About 5 to 6 days after cuttings, the branches begin to take root. If the branches have buds on them, they will bloom naturally. As new leaves and flower buds appear, you can apply an appropriate amount of diluted organic fertilizer , such as cake fertilizer water, chicken manure fertilizer water, or use slow-release fertilizers and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote the increase of flowers and brighter colors. 5. Daily maintenance Sunflowers need plenty of sunlight and good ventilation. Regular pinching can promote branching, make the plant fuller, and form spectacular flower balls. In short, the cutting propagation of sunflowers is very simple, it has a strong rooting ability and grows fast. Whether the branches have flower buds or not will not affect their rooting.
