How to prevent and control rose diseases and pests?

Rose is loved by many gardening enthusiasts for its beauty and fragrance. Every spring, flower lovers get busy watering and fertilizing the roses, hoping that they can thrive and bloom more flowers. However, as temperatures gradually rise, the threat of pests and diseases also increases. In order to prevent roses from being invaded by diseases and pests, it is particularly important to take preventive measures in advance. Let’s learn how to prevent and control rose diseases and pests.

1. Red spider

Red spider mites are one of the common pests of roses. They prefer dry and hot environments and often leave small, barely noticeable red spots on both sides of rose leaves. Red spider mites suck the juice of young leaves. Over time, they will form a web of fine silk on the leaves, causing the leaves to turn yellow and fall off.

Solutions to this problem include washing spider mites off leaves with clean water or removing affected leaves and destroying them. If the situation is serious, you can use Jinmanzhi or trichloronate emulsifiable concentrate for spraying and keep the environment ventilated. Using it twice in a row can usually effectively control red spider mites.

2. Aphids

Aphids are troublesome pests in rose care. They often gather on young branches and leaves, sucking plant sap and causing damage to the plants.

Methods to prevent and treat aphids include wiping or spraying branches and leaves with 75°C alcohol, or spraying with drugs such as Flower Protector and Imidacloprid in severe cases.

3. Scale Insects

Scale insects are difficult to control because of their strong infectivity and hard shell resistance. They attach themselves to the branches of roses and once they occur, they will quickly spread to other branches. Scale insects can be effectively removed by wiping and spraying infected branches and trunks with vinegar or alcohol, or by using drugs such as Chibizhi.

4. Black spot disease

Black spot disease usually occurs in the summer rainy season, and the humid and hot environment is a breeding ground for it. In the early stages of the disease, small black spots appear on the leaves, which then spread and cause the leaves to turn yellow and fall off. To prevent black spot disease, the soil must be sterilized during cultivation, the affected branches and leaves must be promptly cut off and destroyed when the disease occurs, and chlorothalonil must be used for spraying.

5. Powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that roses are easily infected with when the temperature rises. It will form white powder on the leaves and tender shoots. In severe cases, the leaves will turn yellow, curl and fall off. To prevent and control powdery mildew, the environment needs to be kept ventilated. After the disease occurs, the affected branches and leaves should be removed and destroyed, and thiophanate-methyl or thiophanate-methyl should be sprayed for prevention and control.

6. Rust

Rust spot disease, also known as rust disease, mostly occurs from May to September. Initially, small rust-colored spots appear on the leaves, and then the spots spread, causing the leaves to turn yellow and dry. To prevent and control rust disease, it is necessary to remove diseased branches and leaves in time, spray with wettable powder of chlorothalonil or triadimefon, and keep the environment ventilated.

In general, roses are known as "medicine jars" among flower lovers, which implies that they are relatively susceptible to diseases and pests during maintenance. Once roses are infected with diseases and pests, it is often difficult to cure them completely. Therefore, the maintenance of roses requires not only careful care, but also attention to the prevention and management of diseases and pests.
