How to grow hollyhock

illumination

Hollyhock prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight and tolerates partial shade.

When growing hollyhocks, you should place them in direct sunlight to expose them to sunlight.

temperature

Hollyhock is cold-resistant. The above-ground branches wither and die in winter, but the underground perennial roots can survive the winter in the open field and sprout new buds the next year. It can safely overwinter in the open field in North China.

The growing temperature of hollyhock is 25℃-30℃, and the most suitable temperature during the flowering period is 26℃-28℃. The monthly average temperature below 17℃ will affect flowering, and the night temperature below 14℃ will cause poor growth.

Watering

Pay attention to watering regularly to keep the soil moist, but do not overwater as hollyhocks are afraid of waterlogging.

Hollyhock should be watered appropriately during the flowering period to extend the flowering period and increase the number of flowers.

soil

Hollyhock has a strong adaptability to soil and is resistant to salt and alkali, and can still grow in soil with a salt content of 0.6%.

It grows best in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil rich in organic matter.

Fertilization

Before planting hollyhocks, deep till the soil and add basal fertilizer to the soil.

Apply liquid fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen and potassium once or twice during the growth period. After the flower buds are formed, apply liquid fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers once or twice.

Matters Needing Attention in Hollyhock Cultivation

Timely pruning

After hollyhock blooms, cut off the above-ground part in time so that new buds can sprout.

Summer partial shade

Due to the strong light in summer, hollyhock should be kept away from direct sunlight as much as possible to avoid affecting the growth of the plant. It should be properly shaded to absorb scattered light.

Controlling plant height

In order to dwarf the plant, you can use root cutting to control the height. That is, during the growth period, use a milling machine to cut the roots vertically 10 cm to the left and right of the root of the plant. 2-3 weeks after cutting, cut the front and back two more times.

The more times the roots are pruned, the shorter the plant will be and it will be suitable for potted plants.
