Boston fern cultivation methods and precautions

Boston fern cultivation methods and precautions

Soil requirements

For potted plants, choose a mixture of leaf mold, river sand and garden soil. If conditions permit, use sphagnum moss as the culture medium for better growth. Repot every other year in spring.

  Watering method

The principle of watering is to keep the soil moist. Boston fern has strict requirements on water. It should not be too wet or too dry. It is best to keep the soil in the pot moist at all times. In summer, you can spread some wet sand on the ground around the flower pots and spray some water to increase the environmental humidity. When the room temperature is low in winter, reduce watering and keep the soil slightly moist.

In summer, you can water it once every 1 to 2 days, but in winter, you should control the amount of watering. Spray water on the plants and the surrounding environment 2 to 3 times a day to increase the air humidity. In autumn and winter, wait until the soil is half dry before watering. If the plant wilts due to lack of water, you can soak the entire pot in water to rejuvenate it and spray the leaves more often. If the plant has not regained its upright shape after soaking for 24 hours, you may want to cut off all the leaves to promote the growth of new leaves. The root system of Boston fern is weak and extremely sensitive, so the fertilizer concentration should not be too high, otherwise it will be easily injured. However, ferns prefer fertile and water-retaining soil, so the best way is to add well-rotted manure when potting, and then apply thin fertilizer later. When applying fertilizer, avoid the fertilizer liquid contaminating the leaves. If they are accidentally contaminated, immediately spray clean water to rinse them clean. In addition to culture soil and decomposed compost, coarse sand can be added to the growing medium to avoid excessive stickiness, and remember to lay the base with coarse gravel and small stones at the bottom of the pot first.

Repotting

Generally, the potting should be changed once every year in spring, and the potting soil should be mainly leaf mold mixed with a small amount of river sand. In places where conditions permit, if moss and other materials can be used as cultivation media, the plant will grow better. Also, Boston fern. It likes a warm environment, the suitable temperature for growth is 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the wintering temperature should not be lower than 5 degrees. In winter, the room temperature should be kept above 6 ℃. If you find that the old leaves on the lower layer are withered and yellow, you should cut them off in time to maintain the beautiful shape of the plant.
