Complete knowledge of Crassulaceae

Complete knowledge of Crassulaceae

Succulent plants are becoming increasingly popular in the flower-growing world, with the Crassulaceae family being the first to bear the brunt. As the main family of Crassulaceae, Sedum is also being grown by more and more flower lovers. In order to help flower lovers better understand the habits of Sedum and take better care of it, the editor will introduce you in detail the classification and varieties of Sedum, as well as the key points of maintenance!

Introduction to Sedum

Other names and origin

The origin of Sempervivum succulent plants is Central and Southern Europe, the Caucasus in North Africa, and Asia Minor (East Asia), and they are gradually distributed to Asia and the Americas, including the hilly areas of China, Japan, Myanmar, India, and Canada in North America.

Latin name: The genus name is derived from the Latin words semper (eternal) and vivium (growing).

Chinese name: Longevity grass, Spider's nest Wandai grass (named by a Japanese botanist)

Species of Sedum

Initially, 23 species of Sedum were discovered (1930s). After it became popular, the number of recorded species of the genus Sedum increased dramatically. The main reason is that the succulents in this family are very easy to hybridize, and their names and numbers are very confusing.

For example: S.tectoram, this succulent has 500 varieties and more than 70 scientific names and cultivation names! Some of them are early naturally hybridized varieties and variants, and after screening, there are as many as 50 varieties.

In the mid-Meiji period in Japan, Sempervivum succulents became popular and widely propagated. In recent years, succulents have been introduced into my country, mostly from Japan. The most common home-cultivated variety of Sedum is Sedum sempervivum.

Morphological characteristics of Sedum

Sedum is a perennial succulent herb with slightly thick leaves arranged in rosettes. The leaves are compact and covered with silky hairs. The flowers of the genus Sempervivum are cymes of panicles; they come in colors such as red, yellow, white, and green. It is quite similar to the genus Aeonium.

Care tips for Sedum succulents

How to propagate Sedum

Sedum succulents are very cold-resistant and sensitive to high temperatures. During reproduction and cultivation, it is necessary to pay attention to maintaining air circulation, especially in the summer when high temperatures are present, as they are prone to black rot.

When choosing soil, choose humus soil, with sandy soil on the top, which is slightly acidic. The propagation method can be division and leaf cuttings, and seeds can be easily obtained by hybridization. It should be noted that you should not water from the top of the plant, otherwise the silky hairs will disappear and affect its ornamental value.

Pest and disease control of Sedum

The main ones are leaf-eating pests and rot fungi. Generally, lethal pesticides are effective against insect pests and generally have strong disease resistance.

Common classification of Sedum succulents

Classification method

Because the genus Sedum is very easy to hybridize in natural and artificial conditions, there is great controversy over its classification.

Early succulent experts generally divided the genus Sempervivum into two subgenera: Sempervivum and Jovisbarba. Now it is generally divided into two groups. In recent years, scholars have been continuously sorting out early varieties and confirming species of European origin, making the classification more scientific.

Common Sedum succulents

Juanjuan: The leaves are all green with spider-like silky hairs on the tips. This species became popular in the 1940s and is relatively common now, but it is still a beautiful variety.

Big Red Juanjuan: A horticultural cultivar, the plant has a diameter of 6-7CM, with fine hairs on the leaf margins, almost no hair or silky hairs on the leaves, wide leaf tips, obvious leaf tips, and red leaf bases. After autumn, the plant gradually turns red and the branches become short. It is cold-resistant and its growing season is winter and spring.

Purple Peony: The leaf margins have short white hairs, and in late autumn the plant begins to turn dark red from the leaf base.

Lingjuan: The leaf tips are red for many generations, and the whole plant is hairless except for a small amount of white hairs on the leaf edges.

In addition there are: large flower silk, silk, Wu's herb, sundae, silk cherry, etc.

Hybrids of the genus Sedum

Since the genus Sedum is very easy to hybridize in nature, more than 200 varieties have been produced. A large number of studies began in the mid-19th century (between 1853 and 1870), and the relationship between the natural hybrid varieties of arachnoidea, montanum, and wulfenii was discovered. Subsequently, their hybridization relationship with tectorum and grandiflorum was discovered, which provided forward-looking basic research for the classification and artificial hybridization of this genus.
