How to grow Clivia and what are the precautions

How to grow Clivia and what are the precautions

1. Soil

1. Soil is the most important part of plant survival. Clivia likes soil rich in humus, which is very fertile, and has good air permeability and water permeability, which is suitable for the breathing of Clivia roots.

2. Adding some fine sand and gravel into the prepared soil will help the root growth of Clivia. However, you don't need too much sand and gravel, about 50% is enough.

2. Lighting

1. The growth of any plant cannot be separated from the sunlight, and the same is true for Clivia. However, Clivia is a medium-day plant. Although it cannot lack sunlight on weekdays, too little sunlight is not good either.

2. The most suitable lighting condition for Clivia is half shade and half sun. Build a shade shed for Clivia, preferably a shade structure with holes, which can both block the sunlight and provide sunlight to Clivia. In addition, if there is a shade tree, a grape trellis, etc., it would be more perfect to place the Clivia under the shade tree or grape trellis.

3. Pay special attention to the light in the summer. It is enough to put the Clivia in the sun for 3 to 5 hours ~ Also pay attention to shade!

4. In winter, the sun shines obliquely, which is the most suitable light for Clivia. When the daytime temperature reaches above 12℃, you can open the windows to allow Clivia to receive sunlight. But one thing is that you have to prevent direct sunlight at noon. It is best to set up a top curtain for shade, especially when the sun sets, and pay attention to shading on the south side.

3. Temperature

1. Another important condition required by plants is temperature. Clivia prefers a semi-shaded and cool environment, and 15-25℃ is the most suitable temperature.

2. In summer, especially when the temperature is high, you must pay attention to avoiding the heat, build a shade shed, or place it under the shade of a tree. Otherwise, the leaves will become narrow and long, affecting the viewing experience.

3. Clivia will go dormant and stop growing when the temperature is below 5℃. Therefore, the suitable temperature for growth in winter is 15-20℃, and it is best not to be lower than 10℃. After the flower arrow shoots, the temperature should be maintained at around 18°C, and the temperature difference between day and night should be around 10°C. Otherwise, the flower arrow will not bloom before it grows to an appropriate height, which may easily lead to "sandwiched arrows".

4. Water

1. Water is also an indispensable part of plant growth. Clivia has well-developed fleshy roots that can store more water and has a certain degree of drought resistance. Therefore, Clivia should not be watered too frequently. Water it only when the surface of the soil in the pot is dry.

2. According to general experience, water once every 3-5 days in winter, once every 1-2 days in spring and autumn, and increase the watering frequency appropriately in summer. Another point we should pay attention to is that Clivia needs less water in the seedling stage and more water in the flowering stage. Don't make a mistake.

3. The time of watering should be accurate. It is best to water before sunrise and after sunset, especially after sunset. This is especially important in the hot summer.

In the summer when the weather is sunny and hot, you can spray the Clivia with water 2 to 3 times a day to ensure that it can safely spend the summer. In winter, it should be done when the room temperature is above 10℃. Water less when the temperature is below 10℃.

4. For Clivia in small pots, you can bury it in wet sand in a large pot, so that the moisture in the sand can continuously penetrate into the small pot through the pot wall to replenish the water needs.

For large Clivia plants that require more water and have larger flowerpots, you can place the large Clivia pot in a large shallow water tray so that water can be continuously provided through the soil.

5. Fertilizer

1. Clivia likes fertilizer, but too much fertilizer will also cause trouble to Clivia. The principle of fertilizing is "apply small amounts of fertilizer frequently". There are three main types of fertilizers: dry fertilizer, water fertilizer and solid fertilizer.

2. The correct way to fertilize Clivia is to apply fermented solid fertilizer once a month in spring and autumn, and liquid fertilizer once a week, mainly nitrogen fertilizer. It is best not to apply topdressing in winter and summer, or apply solid fertilizer to Clivia once in winter, apply less nitrogen fertilizer, and more phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer.

3. The fertilizer applied can be fully fermented thin cake fertilizer water, or roasted castor seeds, sesame seeds and other oil seeds can be crushed and buried in the potting soil as fertilizer. Eggshell powder and fermented fish water are good phosphorus fertilizers, while rice bran ash and cigarette ash are easily available potassium fertilizers. You can also apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers to promote the germination of more new leaves. Avoid applying concentrated fertilizers and unfermented raw fertilizers.

4. We should also pay attention to the raw materials used for seasonal fertilization. In winter and spring, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are mainly applied; in autumn, nitrogen fertilizers are mainly applied. Foliar fertilizer is often used in summer, with 0.1% potassium dihydrogen phosphate or superphosphate sprayed on the leaves. However, since Clivia often enters a dormant period in summer, fertilization should be done with caution. In addition, foliar fertilization can be carried out all year round.

6. Notes

1. In summer, you must pay attention to cutting off excess flower arrows. The normal flowering period of Clivia is from New Year's Day to the Spring Festival. In summer, the arrows cannot bloom well. If they are not cut off in time, they will consume nutrients and affect normal growth and flowering in winter and spring.

2. When watering in winter, be sure to avoid using tap water or well water directly to water the flowers, because the large temperature difference will cause the plants to catch a cold. We can first store the cold water indoors for 1 to 2 days to allow the harmful substances in the water to precipitate or evaporate, and also leave enough time for the cold water to warm up.
