Dahlia cultivation methods and precautions

Dahlia has bright colors and a long flowering period. It is known as the "flower of a thousand faces" and symbolizes good luck. It is a popular flower that is loved by the public. Many people want to grow dahlias. Let's talk about the cultivation methods and precautions of dahlias.

1. Soil

Dahlias prefer loose, breathable and well-drained sandy soil. They can be cultivated in a 1:1:1 ratio of one part garden soil, one part coarse coconut bran or nutrient soil, and one part coarse sand.

2. Sunlight

Dahlia is a plant that likes semi-shade. It needs to be shaded when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees. If it is too shaded, its branches will grow too long and it will not bloom. Dahlia likes warm and cool climates, and autumn is best for its growth and flowering.

3. Watering

Dahlias are afraid of drought and waterlogging. If planted in the ground, they do not need watering. However, if it does not rain for a long time, they still need watering. If planted in potted plants , water them thoroughly when the soil is dry.

4. Fertilization

Dahlia is a fertilizer-loving plant and needs to be fertilized with a three-element compound fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. If fertilizing is stopped during flowering, prune and fertilize in time after flowering. Normally, fertilize once every half a month. If the plant enters a dormant period, you cannot apply fertilizer. If the temperature exceeds 30 degrees, you cannot apply fertilizer either.

5. Reproduction

The main methods of dahlia propagation are root division and cuttings. Root division is only useful if the tubers have roots and buds. If either is missing, the tubers must be thrown away. Dahlia cuttings are suitable for spring and autumn.

6. Winter

If dahlias are planted in pots, they should be moved indoors to keep warm in winter. If the soil in the pots is too dry, water them less. You can also dig out the tubers, dry them, and store them covered with dry sand. If planted in the ground, cover them with film and then cover them with a thick layer of soil to prevent the tubers from being frozen.
