Plant Culture of Camellia sasanqua

Camellia sasanqua has been a traditional famous flower in China since ancient times with a long history of cultivation. Camellia sasanqua has been widely cultivated since the Song Dynasty.

"Quan Fang Bei Zu" by Chen Jingyi of the Southern Song Dynasty records: "The shallow one is Jade Tea, the deep one is better. The Big Sun Camellia is smaller than the Small Haihong. They have great reputations but few friends, and they live in snow and frost every year." The "Haihong" mentioned here refers to Camellia sinensis.

At the same time, poems describing camellia appeared. In the Song Dynasty, Liu Shiheng's "Ode to Camellia Blossom" described the elegant image and extraordinary charm of camellia: "When the small courtyard is still cold and not yet warm, the sea red flowers bloom slowly. In the half-deep and half-light east wind, the Xu Xi snow-covered branches are so beautiful."

The Ming Dynasty painter Chen Daofu wrote in his poem Camellia that the camellia is small and exquisite: "The flower blooms in the spring snow, and is smaller than the mountain camellia. The old nursery calls it Camellia, and the name is also very nice."

Gao Lian's "Plum Blossom Order: Camellia" in the Ming Dynasty not only describes the light pink and reddish color of the camellia flower, but also writes that the shape of the flower is similar to that of plum blossom: "The flower is, yet it is similar to plum blossom."

Zhang Qiande's "Pinghuapu" in the Ming Dynasty listed Camellia as "sixth grade and four lives".

The horticultural value of Camellia sasanqua

As an excellent flowering shrub, Camellia sasanqua has broad development prospects in landscaping.

The camellia sasanqua has a beautiful tree shape, lush flowers and leaves, and can be planted alone in courtyards and lawns. For some shorter varieties, they can be combined with other shrubs and planted in flower beds or as landscape materials.

Camellia sasanqua has a voluptuous appearance and produces many flowers, making it suitable for pruning. It can also be used as a basic planting and evergreen hedge material. It can be a flower hedge when it blooms and a green hedge after the flowers fall.

We can also make use of natural hilly land to establish a specialized garden for Camellia sasanqua in sparse woods with a certain degree of shade, which can fully display its characteristics and better preserve germplasm resources.

Camellia sasanqua can also be planted in pots and placed in study rooms, meeting places, halls, doorways, windowsills, etc., adding elegance and color.
