How to make elm bonsai

How to make elm bonsai

Preparation

When making elm bonsai, you need to do the preparatory work including stake raising and pruning. The stump needs to be maintained from late autumn to early spring. The newly dug old stump of the elm tree should be planted on plain sandy ground or in a clay pot for maintenance.

Elm trees need to be pruned before being made into bonsai, including the roots and branches. However, please note that when pruning, sticky juice will flow out from the cuts. If there is too much juice, it may affect the survival of the plant. So you need to apply some erythromycin ointment on the cut and then sprinkle some fine sand.

The processed elm plants can be potted and then properly maintained according to the condition of the elm trees.

How to style

In order to make the elm bonsai more ornamental, it needs to be pruned and shaped. The shaping can be done according to the basic form of the plant. Generally, elm bonsai is made in straight trunk, slanted trunk, curved trunk, cliff, jungle, stone-attached and other forms. When pruning the crown of a tree, you can either trim it into a natural, unrestrained shape, or you can trim it into a large dome-shaped tree, or a round shape. When pruning, you can first use wire to tie it into a basic shape and then prune it. In addition, during the growth period, it is necessary to cut off the branches that are too long and too messy to make its shape more beautiful.

Maintenance

Elm bonsai is relatively easy to maintain because elm trees are strong and easy to manage. Basically, the bonsai can be placed in a sunny and ventilated place for maintenance, and it is necessary to ensure sufficient water at ordinary times.

In winter, the elm bonsai can be buried together with the pot in a windproof and sunny place outdoors for maintenance, or it can be moved to a cold room to overwinter. The maintenance temperature should not be too high. If you want to repot, you can do it once every 1-2 years in early spring.
