How to make bonsai of Bauhinia

Material selection

Generally, for bonsai plants, you should choose old root stumps with short growth and dense branches and leaves. Be careful not to have diseases and pests, and do not choose taller varieties.

You can go to the mountains to dig up wild Bauhinia, which mostly grows under mountain mixed woods or beside streams. After digging them up, they need to be nurtured and cultivated, and then the root system can be grown and restored before being moved into pots for cultivation and processing.

Preliminary preparation

Bauhinia bonsai generally uses a deeper glazed pottery pot or purple clay pot, with square, round and oval shapes being the most common. Sometimes a shallower rectangular pot can also be chosen.

The best color for the pot is light yellow or green, which can contrast with the purple-red flowers on the branches, making it more beautiful.

Bauhinia bonsai does not have high requirements for soil quality and can adapt to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soil. Potted plants should be grown in fertile, loose, and well-permeable leaf mold or weathered pond mud mixed with sand and rice husk ash.

Bauhinia bonsai is usually planted in spring between February and March. When planting, the main root and excessively long roots should be cut short, and the branches should also be appropriately shortened, leaving only 3-4 year old branches as the main branches.

Posture Technology

The shaping of Bauhinia bonsai is usually done by cutting mainly and tying as a supplement.

Generally, you only need to tie the main stem into the required posture. It is more convenient to tie it with metal wire, and it is best to do it during the rainy season after flowering.

The branch shaping is done by combining pruning and climbing, and it is best to process it after flowering. The main shapes of Bauhinia bonsai include slanting trunk style, curved trunk style, drooping branch style, jungle style, etc. The natural shape is also good, with purple flowers all over the branches, which is very beautiful.
