The brown bamboo is also known as Guanyin bamboo . It is a clumping shrub with an upright stem. The plant can reach a maximum height of 3 meters. It is mainly cultivated as a foliage plant and can be placed in corners such as the living room or study. It also has a high ornamental value. So how can you grow the brown bamboo to make it more vigorous? Let’s take a look below. 1. Soil The requirements of bamboo palm are not high, but if you want to grow it better, it is recommended to use well-drained, loose and fertile soil. When preparing the soil, you can use garden soil, humus soil, and river sand to mix them, and you can add some base fertilizer appropriately to allow the bamboo palm to grow healthily. 2. Temperature The bamboo palm is native to southern my country. It is a relatively heat-resistant plant, but its cold resistance is relatively poor. It can only withstand low temperatures around 0℃ for a short period of time, otherwise it is prone to frost damage. When caring for bamboo palm at home, a temperature between 20℃ and 30℃ is more conducive to its growth. When the winter temperature is not lower than 5℃, bamboo palm can still grow normally. 3. Lighting The bamboo palm does not require much light and is very shade-tolerant. Even if it is placed indoors in a poorly lit environment for 2 to 3 months, its growth will not be affected. Of course, in order not to affect the viewing experience, after being placed in a poorly lit environment for a period of time, it needs to be placed in a well-lit place to allow the plant to carry out photosynthesis, making the leaves of the bamboo palm greener and more shiny. When cultivating bamboo palm, it must not be placed in direct sunlight, especially in summer. It needs to be shaded to avoid sunburn of the leaves, which will cause the leaf tips to dry out and the leaves to turn yellow, affecting their growth and ornamental value. 4. Watering Brown bamboo is not drought-tolerant, so it is better to keep the soil in the pot moist during the growing season. The air is dry in summer and water evaporates quickly. In addition to watering, spray the plant frequently to increase humidity and keep the leaves green. As autumn approaches, the temperature drops and water evaporation decreases, so the amount of watering should be reduced accordingly to avoid the soil in the pot being too wet and causing root rot. In the north, there is heating indoors in winter and the air is dry, so you should spray the plants frequently and clean the leaves to keep them clean and shiny. 5. Fertilization Palm bamboo prefers fertile acidic soil and will grow poorly in alkaline soil. When planting, choose soil rich in humus and add an appropriate amount of base fertilizer to the soil to help the plant grow stronger. Because the bamboo palm is a foliage plant, when fertilizing it, nitrogen fertilizer should be mainly used, and the concentration should be low. It is best to fertilize once a month to avoid fertilizer damage caused by excessive concentration or too frequent fertilization. When the temperature is too low in winter, you need to stop fertilizing. 6. Pruning If the bamboo palm is properly maintained, it grows very fast and has a strong ability to sprout new branches, so there is no need to be reluctant to prune it. On the contrary, proper pruning can not only sprout more new branches, but also increase ventilation and air permeability, and prevent the plant from having yellow leaves, or diseases and pests. When you find that the palm bamboo has yellow leaves, dead branches, or diseased and insect-infested branches, you should prune them in time to save nutrients and promote the sprouting of new branches. 7. Pests and diseases Although bamboo palm is an ornamental foliage plant, it may be invaded by pests and diseases, such as leaf spot disease and scale insects, if it is not properly maintained or the indoor ventilation environment is poor. When leaf spot disease is found on bamboo palm, it is necessary to spray diluted Bordeaux liquid in time. When scale insects are observed on bamboo palm, they should be cleaned promptly with tools such as toothpicks and cotton swabs, or sprayed with 75% alcohol or a diluted solution of omethoate emulsifiable concentrate to kill the insects, so as not to affect the growth of the plants.
