Cultivation and pruning of weeping jasmine

Cultivation and pruning of weeping jasmine

In the past one or two years, weeping jasmine has been highly favored for its outstanding ornamental value. Not only is it beautiful in appearance, but its price has also become more affordable compared to the past few years, allowing more families to enjoy its beauty. In addition, the weeping jasmine has a strong reproductive ability and is relatively easy to maintain. Let’s learn about the cultivation and pruning methods of weeping jasmine.

1. Pot soil selection

Weeping jasmine is suitable for potted planting , especially in warm areas outside the south. Choose loose and breathable soil, such as general nutrient soil, or mix general nutrient soil with garden soil in a 1:1 ratio, or use sandy soil. When planting, sufficient base fertilizer should be added to the bottom of the pot. Fermented organic fertilizer is recommended, which will help the growth of weeping jasmine.

2. Fertilizer and water management

The root system of weeping jasmine is well-developed and drought-resistant, so watering should follow the principle of "water thoroughly when dry". During the growing season, especially in summer, sufficient fertilizer and water should be maintained to promote rapid growth. It is recommended to apply full-element water-soluble fertilizer once every 10 days or so, and this can be shortened to once every 5-7 days in summer.

Due to rapid growth and frequent watering in summer, nutrient deficiencies such as iron and calcium deficiency may occur, which manifest as yellowing and curling of leaves. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly apply a variety of trace element fertilizers to prevent nutrient deficiency. After autumn, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote bud growth and prolong the flowering period.

3. Lighting control

Weeping Jasmine has strong adaptability and can tolerate partial shade as well as grow in full sun environment. When caring for it in full sunlight in summer, you need to pay attention to retaining moisture to prevent sunburn caused by drought. Weeping jasmine is a short-day flower , so avoid long-term exposure to light, such as street lamps or indoor lights, to avoid affecting flowering.

4. Pruning management

Weeping jasmine grows rapidly and should be pruned or topped in time in summer to promote branching and form an ideal plant shape. The inflorescence is relatively long, so it is recommended to increase the plant height appropriately to show its beautiful hanging effect. Proper pruning should also be done after flowering to remove dead and weak branches and keep the plant clean.

5. Keep warm during the winter

Weeping Jasmine is not cold-resistant, and the safe wintering temperature should not be lower than 5 degrees. In frost-prone areas, it is recommended to move the plants indoors in winter to avoid frost damage. When overwintering indoors, the plant should be placed on a south-facing balcony to ensure sufficient light.

The above are the cultivation and pruning methods of weeping jasmine. Through the above methods, you can effectively maintain the weeping jasmine and enjoy its beauty.
