Types of Vegetables to Plant in Fall

Autumn planting and winter harvesting

This type of vegetable is the best choice for everyone. Sow it now and harvest it in winter! Common types of vegetables include cabbage, radish, etc., which can be sown at the end of August.

Autumn Delay Class

You can also choose some delayed autumn vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, etc., sow them in August, and harvest them in November or December. I was too lazy to go out in the cold weather, so I just picked a handful of vegetables from the balcony.

As the saying goes, everyone has their own preferences, and there are still many vegetables that can be planted in autumn. Lettuce, broccoli, radish, Chinese cabbage, rapeseed, romaine lettuce, chives, choy sum, celery, green vegetables, chrysanthemum, Chinese cabbage, spinach, carrots, garlic, fennel...any one of them is enough for you and your family!

What vegetables are suitable to grow in autumn

Chinese Cabbage

Cabbage is not expensive, do you have to grow it yourself at home? In fact, we grow vegetables for health reasons. Planting cabbage now is the best way to eat it in winter!

Choose the seeds well (families usually choose short, strong, early-maturing varieties). They are usually sown 1 to 2 days after the beginning of autumn. Use large and deep flower pots and ordinary garden soil. To avoid strong light after sowing, you can wrap it with paper or black plastic bag, maintain a certain degree of humidity, and uncover it after 2 to 3 days.

When rosettes appear and the plant enters the fruiting period, you need to pay attention to water and fertilizer. Water the plant once every 5 to 6 days and always keep the soil moist.

French beans

Green beans, also known as kidney beans, are one of the most common vegetables on the table. People usually think that green beans are sown in spring, but in fact they can also be sown in autumn.

Because green beans are not frost-tolerant and are afraid of high temperatures, late summer and early autumn are the best time to plant them. It is suitable to be planted in a semi-enclosed balcony at home. Choose short and strong varieties. It can bloom and bear fruit without setting up a support.

Choose a larger flowerpot, measure the seeds and sow them directly into the soil, 3 to 4 seeds per pot, cover with soil, and the seedlings will emerge after a week. If the environment at home is dry, you can cover it with a film. The seedlings can be transplanted when they grow their first leaves. Take good care of the flowers for 1 to 2 months and the seedlings will grow, bloom and bear fruit. When the pods grow to about 10 cm, you can pick them!

spinach

The most popular crop in autumn is autumn spinach. You don’t need anyone to secretly invite you to grow it. You can grow it at home. You can start sowing in mid-to-late August. It will take a month for the flower buds to differentiate and a month for the leaves to grow and mature. In just over two months, you can harvest your own spinach!

Spinach is generally sown by broadcasting. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours, take out and dry them, and place them in a humid environment of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius for germination. They will germinate 6 to 7 days after sowing. When the baby spinach grows a leaf, apply fertilizer and water. Pay attention to proper weeding and pick and eat them when they are ripe.

coriander

Coriander has become a very common side dish because of its unique aroma. It is often difficult to find it when cooking. If you can grow a pot of it at home and pick it at any time, wouldn’t it be much more convenient!

The best time to plant coriander is after mid-August. Sow the coriander seeds in a flower pot or foam box filled with transport soil, ensure sufficient water, and seedlings will emerge in 1 to 2 weeks. The growing period of coriander is relatively short, generally about 30 days at low temperatures and 40 to 60 days at low temperatures. When the coriander is mature, you can pick out the strong seedlings and eat them, or I will collect them all at once. It’s up to you to harvest them!

Things to note when planting vegetables in autumn

Sowing early

In autumn, the daylight hours become shorter and the weather becomes colder, which is not conducive to the growth of vegetables. Therefore, friends who want to grow vegetables at home should hurry up and sow seeds earlier, which will be more conducive to the growth of vegetables. But it cannot be too early. If you sow too early, the temperature will be too high during the growth period of the seedlings, and they will be easily affected by diseases and pests.

Pest and disease control

Vegetables are easily susceptible to various insect pests during the seedling stage, so attention should be paid to prevention and control. Vegetables are easily harmed by viral diseases during their growth period, and there is currently no good pesticide to prevent and control such diseases. Therefore, during the seedling stage, good ventilation should be ensured to avoid a stuffy environment. The most important thing is to prevent and control aphids.

Guaranteed temperature

When planting on the balcony, if the vegetables mature late, pay attention to controlling the temperature. If it is an open-air balcony, pay attention to frost in the morning and evening to prevent vegetables from freezing. When the temperature drops, try to move the flower pots indoors. In addition, pay attention to ventilation for semi-enclosed balconies.
