How to grow chrysanthemum on the balcony

How to grow chrysanthemum on the balcony

1. Soil container selection

In fact, the soil requirements for growing flowers or vegetables on the balcony are basically the same. The soil must be loose, have strong drainage and water retention properties, and be rich in organic matter. Or you can just go to the vegetable garden, select some soil, apply some fertilizer and use it directly.

It is best to choose a trough pot or a pot with a large diameter and depth so that the chrysanthemum has enough space to grow.

2. Cultivation season

It can be cultivated all year round in the south, but requires proper insulation in autumn and winter. In the north, if the home has an enclosed balcony, it can be cultivated all year round. It usually takes 30 to 60 days from sowing to harvesting.

3. Planting seeds

The plant of Chinese chrysanthemum is small and has a short growing period, making it very suitable for balcony planting. Most of them adopt live broadcasting.

Before planting, soak the seeds in water at 30~35℃ for 24 hours, take them out and place them in an environment of 15~20℃ for germination, spray them with clean water every day to ensure humidity.

After the seeds germinate, sow them directly in pots.

Choose a sunny day when sowing. In spring, you can cover the seeds with plastic film, and in summer and autumn, you should provide appropriate shade.

4. Management

After sowing the Chinese cabbage, keep the soil moist and it will sprout in about 6 to 7 days. When sowing in winter and spring, control watering. When the seedlings grow 2 to 3 leaves, thin out the seedlings and increase the distance between them.

5. Pest and disease control

①Disease

Common diseases include leaf spot, sclerotinia and damping-off. To prevent and control these diseases, we must strengthen comprehensive prevention and control, sow seeds at the right time, and prevent over-dense sowing and excessive growth of seedlings. When the disease occurs, spray the pesticide chlorothalonil to kill bacteria (try not to spray pesticides, as green and healthy vegetables grown at home are the best.)

② Pests

Common insect pests include cabbage borer, aphids, etc. The method is the same as that for disease prevention and control: early detection and early elimination.

6. Harvest at the right time

When the Chinese spinach grows to about 20 cm, it can be eaten! Don't pull it out by the roots. Cut it 2 to 3 cm from the bottom of the stem. It can continue to grow after a while!
