How to grow lettuce on the balcony

Material preparation

Flower pot: Lettuce can be described as a lazy man’s vegetable and is very easy to grow as long as the flower pot is spacious enough.

Soil: Ordinary garden soil will do.

Shovel: It depends on the size of the flower pot, but it doesn’t matter if it’s a little smaller!

Watering can: optional, just have a watering tool.

Seeds: Go to the market to buy better varieties. Remember to check the production date. Expired seeds have a lower germination rate.

Planting method

Soil preparation

Put the prepared soil into the flowerpot, with the soil 2 to 3 cm away from the edge of the pot. If it is a modified appliance at home, pay attention to the drainage holes at the bottom.

Sowing Seeds

Lettuce seeds are small, so you can just sprinkle the seeds directly into the soil. The density of the seedlings does not matter for now, you can thin them out after the lettuce seedlings grow out. The thinned out seedlings can be eaten directly or transplanted into other pots.

germination

After planting, they will germinate in about a week. It is important to keep the plant in sufficient sunlight but not in too strong a sun, and to keep the soil in the pot moist. Watering should be coordinated with sunlight to keep the soil moist. Overwatering can cause the seedlings to grow leggy and the lettuce to become thin and weak. If you take good care of the lettuce during the germination period, the growth of the lettuce will basically be stable and there won’t be any major problems!

Maintenance

Fertilization: After the seedlings grow out, you can apply some liquid fertilizer. It is best not to use chemical fertilizers. If you are not afraid of getting dirty, you can find some chicken manure, cow dung or earthworm poop.

Thinning: After the seedlings grow, they must be thinned out to leave them enough space to stretch so that the leaves will be wide and strong.

Harvest

It takes enough one month from sowing to harvesting lettuce. As long as you take good care of it, it will definitely be more attractive than the lettuce on the market. Just wash the lettuce you have and you can eat it. Lettuce can also be grown together with other vegetables. Green vegetables and peppers are good choices.
