Cultivation methods and precautions of Daphne koreana

Daphne odora is loved for its elegant form, bright leaf color, lavender flowers, and rich fragrance. However, many flower lovers have reported that Osmanthus fragrans is difficult to maintain, and its leaves are prone to softening, yellowing, and even the entire plant withering. Osmanthus fragrans is a relatively delicate flower . If you don’t understand its growth habits, it will naturally be difficult to care for it. Let’s learn about the cultivation methods and precautions of Osmanthus fragrans below.

1. Afraid of poor ventilation

If you place the purchased Osmanthus fragrans directly in an unventilated room and the soil is moist, the leaves will easily soften. An unventilated environment is extremely detrimental to the growth of flowers, especially in winter when the indoor environment is closed and there are few ventilation opportunities, which can easily lead to yellowing and falling leaves. Therefore, even in warm and sunny weather, windows should be opened frequently for ventilation to promote healthy plant growth.

2. Afraid that the soil in the pot is too moist

Osmanthus fragrans likes a humid environment, but is also afraid of waterlogging. Its root system is fleshy and prolonged exposure to wet soil can cause damage, potentially leading to root rot and yellowing leaves. Watering is very important during winter maintenance. The soil should be prevented from being too dry or too wet. Water the plant in time when the soil is dry, and reduce watering when the soil is moist to prevent water accumulation from causing root rot and leaf fall.

3. Afraid of changing pots during the bud stage

Many flower lovers change the pots immediately after purchasing the Osmanthus fragrans with flower buds. This may cause the plant to be unable to adapt to the new environment for a long time, and the flower buds and leaves begin to wither. It is not advisable to change pots or soil in winter because the temperature is low and the plants are in the reproductive growth stage. Changing pots may damage the root system and affect normal growth and flowering. It is recommended to wait until the spring warms up and the plant’s flowering period is over before repotting.

4. Don’t like low temperature environment

Although Osmanthus fragrans has a certain degree of cold resistance, if you want it to bloom in winter, it should not be placed in an environment with too low temperatures. Staying in a sub-zero environment for a long time may cause frostbite on the branches and leaves, causing the leaves to turn yellow, become soft and fall off. During winter maintenance, the ambient temperature should not be lower than 10℃ to avoid yellowing and falling leaves. If you want to promote flowering, you should place it in an environment above 15℃.

5. Don’t like random fertilization

Improper fertilization during the bud-forming period of Osmanthus fragrans will affect flowering. The plant needs more phosphorus and potassium during the bud formation period. If too much nitrogen fertilizer is used, it will affect the normal growth of the flower buds and may even cause only leaves to grow without flowers. During the bud formation period, you can add appropriate phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and water them once every ten days to half a month to promote the growth of flower buds, increase the number of flowers, and make the fragrance more intense.

In short, as long as you understand the growth habits of Osmanthus fragrans and carry out reasonable care, you can make it grow luxuriantly and avoid the phenomenon of leaf softening, yellowing or whole plant withering.
