What to do if spider plants grow slowly

What to do if spider plants grow slowly

1. Increase lighting

One of the reasons why spider plants grow slowly when grown indoors is that they are not exposed to enough light. Although it is a relatively shade-tolerant plant, it still needs sufficient light when grown, especially indoors. It cannot be allowed to grow in a hidden environment for a long time, as this will cause its leaves to become narrow, dull in color and easy to break.

When growing it indoors, you need to meet its need for light. Generally, it should be placed in places with better light, such as the south balcony or south windowsill, so that it will grow faster.

2. Increase nitrogen fertilizer application

Chlorophytum is a plant that likes fertilizer. Reasonable fertilization can promote its growth.

When growing the plant, bury some nitrogen fertilizer or compound fertilizer in the flowerpot every month. However, be sure not to apply too much fertilizer. If you are worried that the fertilizer is too concentrated, use some dilute fertilizer water or water once after fertilizing.

Note that if it is a variegated leaf variety such as the golden heart spider plant, do not use too much nitrogen fertilizer, so as not to affect the ornamental value of the spider plant.

3. Trimming and shaving

Pruning and shaving is really an important method to make spider plants grow quickly. Many varieties are more suitable for pruning. They do not grow long and are easy to break, so you can shave them ruthlessly, which can accelerate their growth.

Cut the plant drastically, leaving only about 3cm of the surface of the pot, and cut off the rest. After shaving, you can place it in a place with sufficient light for maintenance. It won’t take long before you can see the lush green spider plant growing.

4. Change pots and soil

The roots of spider plants grow relatively fast and can quickly fill the entire pot. The space for roots to expand becomes smaller and the soil begins to become compacted, which will restrict its growth.

Therefore, when cultivating it, it is best to repot it once a year. When repotting, the roots should be heavily pruned and new soil should be replaced.
