Kale pests and diseases and their control

Kale pests and diseases and their control

Diseases of kale

There are relatively few diseases affecting kale, the two main types being soft rot and downy mildew. Let’s look at the corresponding prevention and treatment methods below.

Soft Rot

In the early stage of the disease, spray 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder and other corresponding chemical agents in time for prevention and control.

Downy Mildew

In the early stage of the disease, it is necessary to spray 50% methoxychlor wettable powder in time to achieve better prevention and control effects.

Pests of kale

aphid

Aphids are highly fertile and often gather in large numbers on kale leaves and tender stems to suck the sap. Generally, in the initial stage, spray chlorpyrifos emulsion for prevention and control, or use 40% oxydemeton-methyl to reduce the damage in time.

leaf roller

That is, leaf rollers. The larvae often roll up leaves with silk and hide inside to feed. Specific prevention and control methods are as follows:

(1) In winter, overwintering insects can be effectively eliminated by burning the surrounding dead grass and fallen leaves.

(2) Remove or kill any leaf roller infestations promptly.

(3) When leaf rollers occur in large numbers, you can spray with 50% fenitrothion, 50% phoxim 1000-1500 times diluted, or 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate.

cabbage caterpillar

The adults are active during the day, laying eggs on the underside of leaves, while the larvae live in groups and feed on the leaf pulp. After the third instar, the damage is dispersed, feeding on the back, surface or tender tips of leaves in the morning and evening, and the affected leaves become notched. Prevention and control measures include artificially catching larvae; when their number is large, they need to be sprayed with 80% DDT emulsion or 1000-1500 times diluted carbofuran in time.
