Peony Pests and Control Methods

Peony Pests and Control Methods

Peony pests: scale insects

Scale insects are also known as scale insects. There are several species of scale insects that harm peonies, such as the cottony scale, the Japanese wax scale, the Changbai shield scale, the mulberry white shield scale, the peony round scale, and the arrow-pointed shield scale. They mainly suck the body fluids of peonies, causing the plants to grow weak and the branches and leaves to turn yellow.

Solution: During the peak hatching period of scale insects, spray 1000-1500 times diluted 40% oxydemeton-methyl, 800-1000 times diluted 50% malathion emulsion, or 1000-2000 times diluted 50% phoxim emulsion for prevention. When infestation occurs, use a soft brush to remove it, or cut off the infested branches and burn them.

Peony pests: aphids

After the peony sprouts in spring, aphids will fly in and cause damage, sucking the sap of the leaves, causing the affected leaves to curl and turn yellow. After the seedlings grow up, aphids often gather on the tender shoots, pedicels, backs of leaves, etc., causing the stems and leaves of the seedlings to curl and shrink, and even the whole plant to wither and die.

Solution: Protect the natural enemies of aphids such as the seven-spotted ladybug by spraying 1000-1500 times diluted 40% malathion emulsion, 1500-2000 times diluted 80% dichlorvos, or 1000-1500 times diluted 50% aphidicide emulsion for prevention and control. Prevention and control of black spot disease of peony pests and diseases: spray 500 times diluted 65% mancozeb wettable powder in the early stage of the disease, which has a certain effect ; after flowering and before the disease occurs, spray an equal amount of Bordeaux mixture every 7 to 10 days for prevention and control until autumn. Although this cannot cure the disease, it can alleviate the symptoms ; concentrate on burning dead branches, diseased branches, etc .; disinfect the soil with 1 : 100 formalin solution ; do not continue cropping after 3 to 4 years.

Peony pests: Red spider mites

You can spray 1000 times diluted 20% dicofol wettable powder or 2000 times diluted 40% dicofol emulsion ; spray 0.2 to 0.3 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture in summer. Spray again 6 to 7 days after spraying, and spray water to clean the leaves in time.

Peony pests: Scarab beetle

There are many kinds of beetles that harm peonies, such as the black-velvet gill beetle, the apple beetle, the yellow-haired gill beetle, etc. Their adults harm peony leaves and flowers ; the larvae feed on the roots of peonies, and the wounds caused create conditions for the infection of Fusarium, leading to the occurrence of root rot.

Peony pests: white grubs

Deeply plow the land to freeze the overwintering insect eggs to death. In early spring, use 1% dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane solution or 20 to 30 grams of furadan per square meter to disinfect the soil by watering.
